Says โI raped as revenge on Runs GirlsโโฆTears as late job seeker is laid to rest in Uyo
THE alleged murderer of late 26-year-old Miss Iniubong Umoren,ย ย graduate of Philosophy, University of Uyo, (UNIUYO), Uduak Frank Akpan has said he wasย prepared to die if that would be the only acceptable justice for the heinous crime.
Akpan who spoke yesterday when paraded at the Police Headquarters, Ikot Akpan Abia, Uyo, ย admitted luring and rapingย more than six girls but denied ever killing more than Iniubong Umoren. He said he lured the girls by advertising forย ย phony job vacancies and that he did thatย ย as a revenge for how girls had been duping him.
His parade was on the day family and friends gathered to commit the late job seeker to mother earth.
The 20-year-old and 200 level student of Public Administration, Obong University, Obong Ntak, Akwa Ibom State, who was paraded alongside his father, Mr Frank Akpan, admitted to killing Umoren when she came for the fake job interview and he demanded for sex to which she agreed but insisted on using a condom.
His words, โWhat happened was that she came for the supposed job interview. I decided to use a reverse psychology on her. I told her whether she can work as secretary in a farm where hard drugs are kept. She said that she was ready to work. When she came I told her this farm doesnโt existโ that it was just a hoax.
โ I told her that before we could even start I would like to have sex with her and she agreed but she gave a condition that I should use a condom which I agreed. While I removed the condom she became furious and picked the nearby stabilizer to hit me on my head. โShe bit my left finger and tried to reach for the door screaming. While I was bleeding, in a bid to stop her, I used the stabiliser also and hit her. And when I hit her she fell and thereafter she died.โ
Continuing, the suspect added his father was not around and never assisted him in any way to either kill or bury the remains of the deceased.
Asked about his motive for inviting the lady to his family house when there was no job, the suspect responded; โInitially, I used reversed psychology on her. I have had very bad experiences with runs girls and prostitutes. I asked whether she could work in a farm where hard drugs are kept and she accepted.
โShe even told me she took marijuana and cocaine .I felt that that was the best way to revenge for the runs girls and prostitutes. I used to patronize prostitutes but now I donโt.
โI am not happy about what has happened. But the commissioner of police has assured Akwa Ibomites and the entire world that justice will take its course. If the justice promised by the police on the matter will mean my life being taken, I am prepared to die.โ
On his part, the father, Frank Akpan, a retired director in the federal ministry of lands, denied knowledge of the crime until he was invited by the police, even as he admitted that the house in which the murder was effected was his own On the confession of his son admitting that he had taken advantage of six girls in the compound, the father responded: โIโm not aware of that. The reason is that we just relocated from Abuja. I have not been around for 30 years. We just relocated because I have been retired. It is not even up to two years since we came back.โ
He denied ever being in the business of selling human parts as alleged.
Asked to comment on the kind of justice he expects in the case, Mr Akpan stuttered and said: โIโm not happy about what my child had done. I donโt even believe this can happen to me after I had sent them to school, tried to bring them up. Yes, justice can be done if the system so permits.โ
The state commissioner of police, Mr Andrew Amiegheme said he decided to parade the suspect to puncture the rumour that he had committed suicide while in police cell. He gave the assurance that the police would do their best to ensure that justice is not only done, but also seen to have been done, stressing that the police cannot cover up any crime in the state irrespective of who is involved. Tears as remains of murdered Akwa Ibom job seeker are laid to rest.
Meanwhile, tears poured as the remains of 26-year-old miss Iniubong Umoren, gruesomely murdered while seeking job were committed to mother earth in her hometown, Nung Ita Ikot Essien, Oruk Anam Local Government area of Akwa Ibom State yesterday.
Late Iniubong Umoren, a graduate of Philosophy, University of Uyo (UNIUYO) was allegedly lured, raped, murdered and buried in a shallow grave by a 20-year-old serial rapist and killer, Uduak Frank Akpan in Nung Ikono Obio village in Uruan Local Government area of the state. Late Umorenโs friends, family, residents and particularly students of Faculty of Arts, UNIUYO defied the downpour to attend the funeral and also stayed till her remains were committed to the earth.
The deceased friends and classmates who came to pay their last respect were clad in black attire and could not hide their grief at the graveside.
The funeral service which started exactly at 10:50 was conducted by Faith Tabernacle Congregation Ikot Ibritam District Oruk Anam, after the lying-in-state at her fathers compound. The brother of the deceased, Mr. Ukeme Ephraim Umoren appreciated members of the community, relatives and friends for coming from far and near to mourn with them. He also commended the state government and security agencies for the support offered to the family in their moment of grief.
Fielding questions from newsmen, the member Representing Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal constituency ,Mr. Unyime Idem reassured that those behind late Umorenโs death would be brought to book.
He urged the people of Oruk Anam LGAย ย and the student community to remain law abiding even as relevant government authorities are working to ensure the deceased get justice.
According to reports, Akpabio was attempting to bribe the EFCC Chairman because he was facing several corruption charges dating back to his tenure as governor of Akwa Ibom State.
The meeting between Akpabio and Bawa was arranged by Abubakar Malami (SAN), the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, who was recently entangled in a N5 million bribery scandal.
Before he was arrested, Akpabio was said to have personally delivered the $350,000 in cash to Bawa.
According to SaharaReporters, Akpabio and his aides were released after a phone call from the Aso Villa to the EFCC Chairman.
According to a senior EFCC source, โHe and five others arrived at the EFCC office and proceeded to meet with Bawa, the newly named Chairman.
โThe meeting was scheduled for the minister by the Attorney General of the Federation, who was recently appointed. You may recall his $5 million bribery case with Malami himself.
โHe was ushered in at 1 p.m. to meet with the EFCC chairman while personally carrying the money. He was apprehended and detained, along with his six aides. After two hours, he was released after receiving a call from the Villa.โ
However, it was unclear if the $350,000 had been issued to Akpabio at the time of writing this story, but SaharaReporters learned that Bawa had been under a lot of pressure to return the money to the minister.
According to sources, Akpabio bribed Malami and others with $5 million in order to name Effiong Akwa as the sole administrator of the Niger Delta Development Commission, which both of them denied.
There have also been reports of an N40 billion fraud in the NDDC, which is under Akpabioโs ministryโs oversight, explaining the pressure on Akpabio to clear his name of the corruption allegations that hang over his head.
Last year, the Senate and House of Representatives agreed to investigate the NDDCโs Interim Management Committeeโs (IMC) suspected N40 billion financial irresponsibility in the previous three months.
However, Akpabio, whose ministry oversees the department, quickly issued a statement titled โRe: National Assembly investigates suspected N40bn corruption in NDDC,โ claiming that no corruption has been detected in the NDDC while it is under the oversight of the Niger Delta Affairs ministry.
The EFCC is also investigating reports of a N86 billion contract fraud involving Akpabio and the Acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Prof. Kemebradikumo Pondei.
Another source noted the strain on Akpabio, saying, โDonโt forget that he has a long history of corruption cases with the EFCC dating back to his time as a governor. And now, with billion-dollar NDDC scams, heโs under a lot of pressure.
โWhen Akpabio was released, he frantically called Malami, who had arranged his meeting with the EFCC chairmen, pleading with him to drive him to the EFCC office so he could clarify to Bawa that he didnโt mean to hurt him by bribing him, but Malami said he was ill.
โMalami told him he had just returned from Turkey and had gone to Sokoto before collapsing in front of him.โ
Malami collapsed in Sokoto state on April 15 while attending Governor Aminu Tambuwalโs inauguration of the restored State High Court complex, according to SaharaReporters.
The minister reportedly collapsed after giving his speech at the ceremony, but was quickly rescued by his aides and dignitaries, who assisted him in standing.
Following his return to Abuja, he was admitted to a private hospital

By keeping your recipient in mind, youโll also write a more meaningful message. Are they a jokester who loves to laugh? Or would a cutesy saying be more their style? Justice Agatha Okeke of the Federal High Court, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, has sentenced one Dr. Bassey Goddy Usen to 14 years imprisonment without an option of fine.
Usen, a medical doctor and managing director, Ceephass Diagnostic Clinic/Surgery was prosecuted by the Uyo Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC), on a two-count charge of obtaining by false pretence to the tune of N5 million.
One of the charges read, โThat you, Bassey Goddy Usen, the Managing Director of Ceephass Diagnostic Clinic/Surgery on or about the 18th April, 2017 in Uyo, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court with intent to defraud, obtained the sum of N2,000,000.00 (Two million naira) from one Edodiong Essien under the pretence that the money will be used to execute contracts awarded to you by Akwa Ibom State Hospital Management Board, Uyo; a pretence you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 1 (1) (a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act 2006 and punishable under Section 1 (3) of the same Actโ. His โnot guilty,โ plea set the stage for his trial which commenced on October 24, 2018.
In the cause of the trial, prosecution counsel, Agbo S. Abuh presented four witnesses and tendered various exhibits which were admitted in evidence, and closed its case on February 28.
Delivering judgement on Monday, Justice Okeke noted that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and sentenced the defendant to seven years imprisonment on each of the two-count charges. Though there was no option of fine, the prison terms will run concurrently with effect from the day of his arrest. In addition, the convict would restitute the sum of N3 million to his victim as a condition for his release upon completion of his jail term.
Usenโs journey to prison began in 2018, when his victim, Edodiong Essien petitioned the EFCC, alleging that the convict approached him for a loan to enable him to execute a contract, purportedly awarded to him by Akwa Ibom State Hospitals Management Board for the supply of drugs to rural hospitals in the state.
While his claim for the loan is false, as the convictโs name did not feature as a contractor with the stateโs Hospital Management Board, he flouted the terms of repayment, and furthermore, issued his victim with dud cheques.

Akwa Ibom State Government has given a nod to the state Covid-19 Incident Management Committee to continue in its aggressive community testing for coronavirus cases and immediate isolation and treatment of persons who have tested positive for the virus.
The state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Comrade Ini Ememobong, made this known while fielding questions on News Day on ARISE TV in Uyo.
The commissioner stated that the state Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, had directed that aggressive community testing for Covid-19 be carried out in the state as part of his administrationโs efforts to curb further spread of the virus.
He stated that apart from the regular testing of those showing symptoms and those identified by contact tracing, it was necessary for the state government to intensify efforts in carrying out aggressive community testing in order to win the fight against the health pandemic.
The state Spokesman said that the approach was one of the adopted measures by the state government to further ensure that students in exit classes currently writing their mandatory examinations as well as those writing the ongoing Senior Schools Certificate Examinations, SSCE were given full protection from contracting the virus.
The commissioner further added that prior to the commencement of the examination, the state government had procured a large number of facemasks for distribution to secondary schools in the state which he said had long been given out to the students for their personal use.
He hinted that although a lot of students had been tested, only one sample was confirmed positive. He explained that the affected student was currently writing the examination from one of the isolation centres in the state with additional measures put in place to ensure that the integrity of the examination was not compromised.
Comrade Ememobong disclosed that the state IMC was currently visiting various communities in the state to carry out random testing to forestall community spread, especially among the people dwelling in the hinterlands.
Addressing questions raised on the amount so far expended on the fight against Covid-19 by the state government, Ememobong stated that Governor Emmanuel was a leader who upholds the principles of accountability and probity in all his financial dealings and would at the right time disclose a comprehensive expenditure details to the public. He allayed the fear that financial details would be withheld from the public domain.
He assured that the state government was working assiduously at flattening the coronavirus curve in the state by increasing contact tracing and arresting community spread of the disease. The Federal Government has disclosed that it is considering sensationalizing classes for primary, secondary, and Universities, and other tertiary institutions in the country ahead of school reopening. This means having morning and afternoon classes . This was made known by the Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, on Wednesday during a briefing by the Presidential Task Force in Abuja. The minister also dispel the rumors that schools will reopen on June 8th stating that the government could not afford to take any costly risk, especially as it regards the safety of pupils and students in the country.
He said, โUntil we are sure these children can go to school, return safely and not put those who are more susceptible than them at risk, then we are running a huge risk and God forbid, in our hurry, something happens to our children, I am not sure how anybody will be able to retrieve what has been lost.โ Nwajiuba said the ministry is being guided by the advice of experts as well as those of the World Health Organization, noting that the pronouncement to regenerate schools in the country would be carefully arrived at because education is on the simultaneous list of the Nigerian Constitution โWe are going to publish a specification on what we expect the reopening to look like. โFor a country that has over 115,000 primary schools, you will understand that 35,000 of these who are private must agree to set up the same standard in other to allow children to go in. โWe may have classes in the morning and classes in the afternoon so that we will have the whole of the infrastructure divided provided they can serve us. I am not sure we will have classes at night. But we can do with morning and afternoon for now,โ he explained. ย โThe Presidential Task Force wishes to use the instance of this celebration to congratulate our children and assure them, their parents and all stakeholders alike that all hands are on deck to reopen schools at a safe time.โ He added. He appealed to private owners of schools in the country as well as other stake holders to co-operate with the administration in ensuring the safe reopening of schools in the country. What do you think about the idea of having morning and afternoon classes.
The 19th Policy Meeting on Admissions to Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria has approved 160 and above as the national minimum benchmark for admission for the year 2020 into public universities. Is an individual’s way of organizing and using a particular set of skills in order to learn content or accomplish other tasks more effectively and efficiently in school as well as in nonacademic settings.
Quality of teaching, particularly in Higher Education, is a subject of increasing importance and attention by public opinion in general. We can support this statement both by consulting the literature related with this subject and by looking at several governments’ measures, namely the Bologna Process. It is known that the lack of motivation and the number of failure, in particular in Physics, is a problem that teachers are facing nowadays. Current research in Science Education indicates that the levels of interaction between teachers and learners in formal instructional settings can be very low. In this study we analyze the effects that some strategies and instruments have had in changing the classroom environment. Through active learning techniques and modeling by the teacher, students shed the traditional role as passive re- captors and learn and practice how to apprehend knowledge and skills and use them meaningfully. We have used a variety of strategies, namely conceptual questions, group projects, reading tasks, assignments with tutorial review, problem solving and a platform of e-learning. These strategies have been used in the first year of an introductory physics course for civil engineers. Although the study is in its early stages the results are promising. It appears that students are more engaged in the classroom, more interested in the subjects that are taught. However some strategies had not been well understood by the students and so it will be necessary to reformulate them. But, in general, the results indicate that the reactions of the students about those innovative strategies are quite positive.
3 TYPES OF LEARNING STRATEGIES
MNEMONIC STRATEGIES
Mnemonic learning strategies help students memorize content, like facts or terms. For example, theyโre useful for remembering capital cities, important dates, vocabulary, etc. When you have to memorize โmeaninglessโ information, mnemonic strategies are a great way to give it some kind of meaning. The value of mnemonic devices is widely agreed upon, which is why theyโve been used for such a long time. The psychologist Allan Paivio explained that these devices work for three reasons:
Dual Coding:
Many involve using non-verbal codes (images) alongside verbal ones (words). What that means is that the same bit of content gets two different codes. According to the principles of connectionism, that makes it easier for students to access the information.
Organization:
Another way these strategies work is by creating a consistent box to put the information in. That helps students keep all the related information together, instead of it being split apart. For example, itโs easier for you to remember a list of words if you form a sentence with them.
Association:
Creating strong connections between different elements is also a strategy for meaningful learning. Strong associations are helpful because when you see either one of the two things, youโll remember the other one easily.
Structural Strategies
Structural strategies stimulate active learning by encouraging students to mentally pick out important information and put it together into one structure. This is where youโll see techniques like making conceptual maps, flow charts, or outlines. Obviously itโs not enough for the teacher to tell students they have to do outlines and summaries. Those things will only be helpful if the students know how to make them. The hardest part of teaching them how to do it is showing them how to pick out the most important or meaningful parts of a text or presentation. It wonโt take long for you to see the effects these techniques have on learning. When you organize course material into small, related ideas, itโs easier to access it. And when you make strong associations between these ideas, itโs also easier to access the rest of the information in your memory. They also help students truly understand the content, unlike with rote, superficial learning. You can see the value now in bringing these learning strategies into the classroom!
Generative Strategies
With the other two strategies, we looked at how they help students remember specific facts and organize them into structures. That is, theyโre techniques to use with new information that needs to be learned. But another important part of learning is incorporating new content into existing knowledge. Thatโs where generative strategies come in. E.Z. Rothkpof called these activities where students gain knowledge โmathemagenic activities.โ Some examples are taking notes, underlining, asking and answering questions, or saying things out loud. They help students reach a deeper understanding because they force them to incorporate the new information. A lot of psychologists see active learning as students making connections between ideas. Thatโs why generative strategies are such a great tool to get students to use that kind of learning. Showing students how to take notes or ask themselves questions will greatly help them understand and incorporate new information.
6 POWERFUL LEARNING STRATEGIES YOU MUST SHARE WITH STUDENTS
Here we will explore six research-based learning strategies that Weinstein and Smith teach on their site. If we can work these methods into our instruction, and teach students how to use them on their own, our students stand a much better chance of actually remembering our material. One final note before we dig in: Although performance assessments and project-based learning allow students to show what they know with more depth and authenticity, most content areas still need to measure some learning with tests. When you are teaching that kind of content, these six strategies will help your students perform better on the test and retain that information long after the test is over.
1. SPACED PRACTICE:
Space out your studying over time.
Far too many students wait until the night before a test to study for it. Similarly, teachers often wait until the day before a test to review. When enough students score well on the test, it appears they have learned the material. But a few weeks later, most of that information has vanished from studentsโ minds. For more durable learning, the studying has to take place in generous chunks over time. โEvery time you leave a little space, you forget a bit of the information, and then you kind of relearn it,โ Weinstein explains. โThat forgetting actually helps you to strengthen the memory. Itโs kind of counterintuitive, but you need to forget a little bit in order to then help yourself learn it by remembering again.โ Teachers can help students apply this strategy by helping them create a studying calendar to plan out how they will review chunks of content, and by carving out small chunks of class time every day for review. In both cases, plan to include current concepts AND previously learned material: Many teachers know this as โspiraling.โ
2. RETRIEVAL PRACTICE:
Practice bringing information to mind without the help of materials. Many people think of โstudyingโ as simply re-reading notes, textbooks, or other materials. But having the information right in front of us doesnโt force us to retrieve it from memory; instead, it allows us to trick ourselves into thinking we know something. Recalling information without supporting materials helps us learn it much more effectively. โPut your class materials away, and then write out or maybe sketch or speak everything you know and try to be as thorough as possible, and then check your materials for accuracy,โ Smith advises. โYouโre bringing information to mind almost like youโre testing yourself; though it can be a practice test, it doesnโt have to be. You can just sort of go through and explain what you know, or teach a friend or a pet or even an inanimate object everything that you learned in school. By bringing that information to mind, you are changing the way that information is stored so that itโs easier for you to get to later on.โ Teach students how to do retrieval practice in class: have them turn off their devices, put all their notes and books away, then ask them to write everything they know about a particular term or topic, or share their meditations in a think-pair-share. When the practice is done, have students check their understanding by revisiting their materials and discussing misconceptions as a class. Once they learn how to do this in school, they can then apply it at home.
3. ELABORATION:
Explain and describe ideas with many details.
This method asks students to go beyond simple recall of information and start making connections within the content. Students must ask themselves open-ended questions about the material, answer in as much detail as possible, and then check the materials to make sure their understanding is correct. Teachers can apply this strategy by having brief class discussions where these kinds of questions are explored and asking students to work elaboration into their own study plans.
4. INTERLEAVING:
Switch between ideas while you study.
Common knowledge tells us that to learn a skill, we must practice it over and over again. While repetition is vital, research says we will actually learn that skill more effectively if we mix our practice of it with other skills. This is known as interleaving. โLetโs say youโre doing a bunch of math problems,โ Weinstein says. โWhatโs fairly typical is โฆ five of the same problem, or 10 of the same problem. Instead of doing that, try different problems in different orders.โ So if students are learning to calculate the area of a triangle, instead of having them do 20 problems with triangles, have them do one of a triangle, then one of a circle, then a triangle, then a square. The thing about that, Weinstein notes, is that itโs actually harder. So theyโll be getting more wrong, theyโll be making more errors, but theyโll also be learning something very important, which is how to choose a particular strategy for each problem, as opposed to just repeatedly doing the same thing. When planning exercises for students, resist the temptation to have them repeat the exact same process multiple times in a row. Instead, have them do a few of the new process, then weave in other skills, so that the repetitive behavior is interrupted and students are forced to think more critically. Explain this strategy to students so they can apply interleaving to their own studying.
5. CONCRETE EXAMPLES:
Use specific examples to understand abstract ideas.
Most teachers already use this strategy in their own teaching; itโs a natural part of explaining a new concept. But what we donโt necessarily do is help students extend their understanding by coming up with examples of their own. Hereโs how Weinstein and Smith explain this broader use of concrete examples as a study practice.
Teachers can apply this strategy by using concrete examples when teaching abstract concepts, then asking students to come up with their own, correcting any examples (or parts of examples) that arenโt quite right, and looking for more. Encourage students to continue this practice when they study.
6. DUAL CODING:
Combine words and visuals.
When information is presented to us, it is often accompanied by some kind of visual: An image, a chart or graph, or a graphic organizer. When students are studying, they must make it a habit to pay attention to those visuals and link them to the text by explaining what they mean in their own words. Then, students can create their own visuals of the concepts they are learning. This process reinforces the concepts in the brain through two different paths, making it easier to retrieve later. And when we say visuals,โ Smith explains, we donโt necessarily mean anything specific, so it depends on the types of materials. You could have an in zoographic, a cartoon strip, a diagram, a graphic organizer, timeline, anything that makes sense to you so long as youโre sort of depicting the information both in a way with words and a way with pictures. This isnโt just for students who are good at drawing,โ Weinstein adds. โItโs not about the quality of the drawing. It really just needs to be a visual representation as you can depict it. In class, regularly turn studentsโ attention to the visuals used in textbooks, on websites, and even in your own slideshow presentations. Have students describe the visuals to each other and make connections with what youโre learning. Then have students create their own visuals of the content to further reinforce it. Remind students to include diagramming, sketching, and creating graphic organizers when they study at home.
8 ACTIVE LEARNING STRATEGIES AND EXAMPLES
As a teacher, one of your biggest challenges is to plan lessons that inspire your students to stay actively involved in the learning process, but youโve probably noticed that traditional, teacher-centered learning plans arenโt always conducive to achieving that inspiration.
The ways that will help you as the teacher are as follow;
RECIPROCAL QUESTIONING
Use reciprocal questioning to encourage an open dialogue in which students take on the role of the teacher and create their own questions about a topic, reading section, or lesson. After covering a topic of your choice in class โ or after assigning a reading selection โ divides the class into pairs or small groups and have students come up with a few questions for discussion with the rest of the class. To facilitate the process, you can provide students with โquestion stems,โ which provide a foundation for a question but still require students to think critically about a lesson, text, or other section of material by completing the query.
THREE STEP INTERVIEWS
A cooperative learning strategy, the three step interview encourages students to develop active listening skills by quizzing one another, sharing their meditations, and taking notes. To use the three step interview process, divide students into groups of three, and assign three roles: interviewer, interviewee, and note taker. After also assigning a theme or topic of discussion, have students participate in a five to 10 minute interview to discuss what they found to be the key information relating to the topic. After each interview, have students rotate roles. Depending on factors including the grade level of your students and their experience with the strategy, you may adjust the length of the time for each interview.
THE PAUSE PROCEDURE
Use the pause procedure to intersperse strategic pauses into your class lectures and enhance student understanding of teaching materials. To use the pause procedure, arrange for pauses of two to three minutes between every 10 to 15 minutes of lecture time. During these brief breaks, encourage students to discuss or rework their notes in pairs to clarify key points covered, raise questions, and solve problems posed by the instructor. Alternatively, students can work together to write a paragraph that connects or highlights key ideas set out in their partnerโs notes.
THE MUDDIEST POINT TECHNIQUE
The muddiest point technique involves asking students to write notes on the most unclear or most confusing element of a given homework assignment, lecture, or class discussion. Asking students to write down what they find to be the least clear is a powerful exercise because it compels them to grade or rate their own knowledge of a topic.
THE DEVILโS ADVOCATE APPROACH
The devilโs advocate approach asks one or more students to take the opposing side of a predominant argument or point of view being discussed during a lesson. Once you have completed an assignment or lesson plan, select a topic that is suitable for discussion and debate. The topic must serve as an appropriate subject for providing arguments from both sides.
The activity is flexible and must be tailored to suit your studentsโ grade level. In its simplest form, divide the class into two sections and coordinate a class-wide debate based on a selected topic.
PEER TEACHING ACTIVITIES
A flexible and multi-faceted approach to active learning, peer instruction encompasses a range of scenarios where students instruct skills or explain concepts to classmates.
Some popular options include:
Reading buddiesโA cooperative learning strategy that pairs two students who work together to read an assigned text.
Cross-age peer tutoring โ A peer learning strategy involving students in different grades, wherein which one student instructs another on material in which the first student is advanced and the second student is a novice.
Role play โ a group of students is split into generous groups and given a specific task to complete, like in small group work. However, in addition to working on a specific task, the members of each group are asked to play a certain โroleโ. Unlike in traditional role-play, all members of one group play the same role, not individually assigned roles.
Peer teaching activities help boost vital skills and behaviors including student interaction, accountability, group processing.
GAME-BASED LEARNING PLATFORMS
Game-based learning platforms add depth and differentiation to the educational process and allow students to work with their instructors to achieve their learning objectives.
ROTATING CHAIR GROUP DISCUSSIONS
Rotating chair group discussions encourage students to actively listen to selected speakers who follow a pattern of guiding class discussion and summarizing previous points. Students lead and stimulate class discussion as they โrotateโ roles, repeatedly selecting the following speaker.
Nigeria has been pursuing techno-economic development objective since the 1962/65 development plan with very limited success. This suggests that Nigeriaโs development strategy may have ignored the progenitor of modern industrial evolution. Interestingly, insights from the early canons of economic thought unequivocally demonstrated that the capital goods sector is the most strategic factor behind industrialization in general and techno-economic development in particular. But unfortunately, contemporary development literature and policy is mute on the subject. It is argued that the absence of a dynamic local capital goods sector is the key reason behind Nigeriaโs import and technological dependence, high rate of unemployment and underdevelopment broadly construed. The critical importance of the capital goods sector for industrialization and techno-economic development stems from the fact that it is the hub for technological innovation, technological entrepreneurship and technological learning-by-doing. Thus, the capital goods sector gives the economy the capacity to become innovative, to become reproductive in character, to create wealth at will, to generate employment and to effectively tackle the challenges of underdevelopment. The applicability of the capital good-led growth strategy is nevertheless contingent on three preconditions (availability of investment capital, availability of absorptive capacity and willingness to invest in capital goods) which Nigeria and other large developing countries can satisfy. Conventionally and theoretically increase in money supply according to the quantity theory of money triggers a high inflation rate in developed and emerging economies. The reality in Nigeria contravenes the quantity theory of money. This study investigates the missing link in Nigeria from January 2010 to December 2018 by applying the Johansen co-integration, Granger causality tests and Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) on the monthly data. The findings indicated that money supply does not cause inflation. Inflation is caused by non-monetary factors of political instability, corruption, poor basic infrastructure among others. Money supply and inflation co-integrate in the long-term. The causality test proposed a uni-directional flow from inflation to the money supply. Bi-directional causality was not observed in this study. The VECM resulT indicated that disequilibrium caused in the previous year can converge back to equilibrium in the current year. The general findings of the study disagreed with the quantity theory of money. The study recommends that non-monetary factors of political instability, corruption, poor basic infrastructure among others were responsible for the missing link. These factors should be checked and put in perspective to achieve lowinflation at a single digit in Nigeria.
This study used monthly time series data from the Central Bank of Nigeriaโs (CBN) Statistical Bulletin from January 2010 to December 2018 to explore the long and short-term relationship and causal link between money supply and inflation in Nigeria.
Implicit Price Deflator to GDP: measured inflation rate and is calculated as the GDP at the current basi prices divided by the GDP at the constant basic prices. The ratio explains and accounts for the change effects of inflation on the overall prices of products and services that make up the GDP.
Money Supply: M2 and M3 were used to investigate the dynamics of inflation. M3 included, M2, M1, M0 and liquid components of money supply that were not in circulation such as repurchase agreement and was the broadest measure of money supply in an economy. M2 consisted of all of M0 and M1 in addition to saving deposits and certificates of deposit.
Monetary Policy Rate (MPR): The minimum rediscounted rate (MRR) served as the CBN interest rate benchmark which anchors all other interest rates in the money market and the economy, influencing the cost of funds and its direction in the economy. Gross Domestic Product: measures the rate of economic growth.

To put it very simply, grassroots mobilization is about getting individuals together to influence a specific outcome. Usually, this is political in nature.
The individuals concerned are locals, the community members, who are the most affected by the outcome they are trying to influence. They act together- in a march, or protest or even make calls to various parliament members to voice their support for a particular course of action.
There are two distinguishing features for every grassroots campaign:
It mobilizes masses (ordinary everyday citizens), to participate in politics: this could be to Get Out The Vote, or vote for a particular cause/campaign.
The communication directly speaks to every individual in the campaign: Door to door canvassing, SMS, phone-calls and emails are usually how every member is contacted. Mass communication tools like TV, radio, and Newspaper are not used.
Thus its main purpose is to encourage community members to contribute to their community by taking action and being responsible for their neighborhood. The medium of communication chosen helps personalize the cause to the individual and get them more involved in the movement.
How does grassroots mobilization work?
1. Collective action
Grassroots mobilization uses collective action (in the local level) to influence outcome in the national level. The โoutcomeโ is typically a cause or a change that the community wants. If the local political body is opposed to that outcome, then the community works together to get their voice heard and effect that change.
Case Study 1.Abahlali baseMjondolo
Abahlali baseMjondolo protesters marched to Durban City Hall Picture: Bongani Mbatha
In 2005, Durban in South Africa saw a major housing crisis. A small settlement, known as the Kennedy Roadshack Community was being forcefully relocated to other areas.
The outrage towards this unlawful removal led to the birth of Abahlali baseMjondolo โ a grassroots community formed by the locals who still fight for housing rights.
The AbM developed organically from the road dwelling community and they campaign against any unlawful housing restrictions against the poor. They are the classic example of the locals taking up the mantle to strive for justice for themselves.
Currently, they are the most influential grassroots organizations in South Africa. They act as an organizational hub for other campaigns that aim to improve housing for the poor and economically backward.
2. Collective leadership
Another aspect of grassroots mobilization is that it is powered by collective leadership. Every single member in the community is equally invested and equally responsible in the cause. They all participate to the extent they can, to accomplish what they have set out to do.
Yes, there are a few administrative heads โ like someone is responsible for communication, and there is usually a figure head for organizing the rallies. However, no single person in the movement is more important than someone else.
This power of equality that grassroots mobilization brings to politics and the community is instrumental in making every single member give his best and take ownership.
Case Study 2. Idle no more
Aboriginal protesterswith #idlenomore
The Idle No More movement is the biggest and most impressive outpouring of aboriginal anger that Canada has ever seen. It started way back in 2013, to protest impending parliamentary bills that were thought to erode Indigenous sovereignty, collective rights, and environmental protections.
It was (and still is) comprised of a series of teach-ins and rallies throughout Saskatchewan. Any individual member can take up the mantle of organizing the teach-in. Or, they can volunteer to educate the community.
The highlight of the movement is how it mobilizes indigenous women to protest, raise their voice and be heard โ with no single leader. Though it was founded by 3 indigenous women and one national ally, it is clearly an open forum that invites everybody to honor indigenous sovereignty and the land and water.
However, every single member is given equal ownership. The reason behind such collective ownership is twofold. The first is that the outcome of the protest if for the community (and does not benefit just a single member). So everybody is equally invested.
Secondly, every member is as affected by the parliamentary bills and the environmental laws as the next member. So for the betterment of the community as a whole, every member has to step up and take action โ which means collective leadership is the best option.
3. Collective funds
All nonprofit organizations need funds. Grassroots communities are no different. They too need money to organize rallies, to educate the community, and also for everyday administrative costs.
When I say collective funds, I do not mean that every member in the grassroots community has access to the funds. I mean that every member in the community has the option of contributing to the cause.
Fundraising is typically done on a large scale โ with many people contributing small sums to the cause. It is also done in terms of memberships.
The community members pay a sum to be part of the local grassroots campaign. This money is used for administrative costs (and other educative /fundraising drives). In return, the members get some benefits of belonging to the community (ready assistance if their home is relocated, free legal consult etc.).
Case Study 3. Feel the Bern
The 2016 Bernie Sanders Presidential Campaign inspired a โgrassroots army of volunteers and small time donors. Since Sanders was competing as an Independent, he needed all the financial assistance he could get.
This was especially true when he rejected money from Political Action Committees (PACs) โ organizations that are usually mired in corruption and conspiracy.
He appealed to the working class Americans to fund his campaign. And they obliged! In what is seen as a massive grassroots movement, Sanders raised his campaign funds from the masses, one small online donation at a time.
Even though every donation was small, the number of donations pouring in was big, reaching at one point, a massive 5.2 million a day! That means he had effectively inspired grassroots supporters to financially support his cause!
How can you get started with Grassroots mobilization?
What I love about each of these success stories is how grassroots organization helped every day, ordinary people, like you and me, effect change.
It could be as simple as just giving a monetary contribution. Or, it could mean taking an educative session to the local community about the relocation options they have.
No matter how small, the efforts amount to a big change because of the scale in which it is done; Also because it is directly at the community level, where it can have most impact.
If you are inspired by this too and want to start your own grassroots movement, here are some pointers.
1. Identify the cause you want to address
Starting with the problem statement would seem just common-sense. However, I mentioned it because rarely is the problem statement and the root cause of the problem similar. Let me give you an example.
Say you want to clean the lakes in your city. The problem statement would mean โdirty lakesโ. However the root cause of the problem is either effluents by industries, lack of legislation by the government, in efficiency of the Local Government to clean it up and so on.
So you would first do your research to narrow down which is the actual root cause you want to tackle. For instance, you would want industries to stop dumping their effluents in the lake.
Then your campaign strategy is two fold. On one hand you would protest outside the industry with your supporters to stop the dumping. On the other, you would try to get a legal bill passed that makes such dumping illegal (if it isnโt already).
Please note that this was just an example to highlight how nuanced a problem could actually be. What it would involve for you entirely depends upon the issue, how your community responds to it, and the local political climate.
2. Recruit supporters/volunteers
The next step in your grassroots campaign would be to create awareness about your campaign and get some interest from the community. Communication plays a key role here. Door to door canvassing and good old face to face talks help immensely.
However, to speed up the process, you also need to have a campaign website. It will act as a mascot for your message, and allow interested followers to register, and follow the events.
Your website also allows a valuable opportunity for you to build a list of supporters whom you can communicate via SMS and phone calls.
3. Partner with local organizations
At least in the initial stages, to gain some traction see if like minded organizations can lend you support. You could have a 2 minute presentation during their events, have your own campaign booth in their rallies and see if you can build your supporters and your message via that. The partners may be religious institutions, nonprofit organizations, universities, etc.
4. Take the help of community leaders
Either train them or collaborate with them to carry on your campaign message. Community leaders are the most influential within the community you choose. The changes you advocate, the measures you put forth will all be accepted easier if it also endorsed by a community leader.
This community leader need not necessarily be a part of your grassroots committee (though it is highly recommended that he is), but more like a consulting partner who is working with you toward the same goal. Religious leaders, local political office holder, the village figure head are all examples of community leaders who can help you.
5. Implement your plan of action
Conduct rallies, outdoor events, in-house focus groups, educative sessions โ any group activity that you think is necessary to effect change. It could be organizing a group of volunteers to talk to the local representative. Or it could be staging a demonstration.
Regardless of which you choose, the key to successful implementation is communication. Broadcast SMS to your supporters with venue details to increase their participation. Use Peer to Peer SMS to talk to new contacts and see if they can come for the events you have planned.
Communicate with your volunteer team and organizers to see if everyone is on the same page. You will of course need the help of professional tools to make this work for you. Call Hub can help.
Similarly, to keep track of the various events, the volunteers and supporters, you may need a CRM (Civic Rm, that integrates with communication tool like CallHub).
6. Evaluate success
What is the outcome you are looking for? Do you already have guidelines to evaluate your campaign efforts? It could be as simple as getting 500 people to a rally, or getting a bill passed. Whichever metric defines you objectives, establish it right at the beginning and refer to it throughout the course of your campaign.
This will also tell you what you can do to improve your campaign next time. For instance, even if 500 people turned up for a rally and you were not able to get the momentum you need, then the goal for the next event would be modified. It would be to get 1000 member sign ups at the rally. So regardless of how many people turn up, if you get the defined sign ups, your campaign momentum will be up!
Best practices for grassroots mobilization
To enlist grassroots supporters you need to inspire citizens through several initiatives, events, and campaigns. Make them understand that the cause is worthy of their wholehearted support. People respond to sincere appeals, so persuade them with reason.
Education is the backbone of any grassroots campaign as people donโt participate in anything they donโt understand.
Once inspired, give your grassroots activists meaningful tasks to do. For example, if your goal is to get citizens to engage with reps, then detail out specific actions to be taken and give each person a meaningful task to do. Some volunteers can give voters the latest information, others can tell them what questions to be asked, how phone calls are to be made, and how individuals can effect change in politics.
Personalize all communication through phone calls, text messages, in-person contact, patch-through calls, direct mail, and emails.
You must keep your activists, volunteers, and staff motivated and help them if they cannot achieve the set goal.
Donโt just raise an issue, tell a story. People must be able to emotionally connect with your campaign so you need to make a human connection through storytelling.
You must trust grassroots activists to take initiative. If you want to mobilize grassroots you must nurture an attitude of freedom and creativity.
Harness momentum by funnelling supporter engagement into clear advocacy action, both online and offline.
Strategies for grassroots mobilization
Host House Parties Or Meetings
An easy way to mobilize people is to host a party or meeting at a community memberโs house. Informal gatherings like these offer a great way for community members and campaigners to get to know each other and discusses the finer points around the issue. People who might be close-mouthed during routine campaign outreach are more open to sharing their concerns in such settings. These get-togethers also increase the probability of people signing up as volunteers in the future.
Engage With People Both Online & Offline
Social media platforms offer plenty of channels for you to engage community members. While these platforms help you reach out to mass audiences they arenโt always effective in engaging them on a personal level. So you need to balance your online interactions with offline activities. These activities can include phone calls from volunteers, personal text messages, door-to-door visits, town halls meetings, setting up information tables in high-traffic areas etc.
Hold Successful Town Hall Meetings
Town hall meetings give your organization or party a chance to meet the community in person and answer their questions. It is also an important part of your grassroots campaign. Therefore, you need to make sure that your candidate is well prepared for the meeting. Since such an event gives you an opportunity to reach out to new supporters make sure you have a registration table or a text-based registration process (eg. Text CHANGE to 52322 for updates!) to keep a track of those who come to the meeting.
Use Social Networks For Grassroots Mobilization
You can use social media to enhance your campaign awareness and build relationships with your audience. These networks help you deliver real feedback to strengthen your message. For example, The Tea Party movement is a good example of grassroots growth. It was a community-based initiative that made use of digital media such as Facebook to coordinate protest events and to rally support for the cause. On Facebook, a page was created to share campaign literature and to start conversations around sensitive issues.
Hashtags are another way to influence and organize people. Use hashtags to group together postings from across the network under a unifying message. Some grassroots movements which used hashtags to organize and advocate people on a large scale on social media are Black Lives Matter, Love Wins, Resist, etc. These tags show how something that starts as a media campaign takes footing to embody a social movement. The โ#resistโ hashtag was even used by event planning sites like Meetup.com to bring together members of a community that want to get involved politically. Resist: Dallas is one such example.
Grassroots mobilization helps political campaigns, advocacy groups, and nonprofits encourage political conversation and effect change at a local or national level. It gives you an opportunity to make a lasting impression on communities by constantly engaging with them through conversations that matter to them. The key is to develop a message that works, test it on different mediums, and enlist community leaders to spread your message. Keep these tips and strategies in mind for your grassroots mobilization efforts
Your-Turn
If you have ever dreamed of changing the world, then you know how powerful grassroots mobilization can be to it. However remember that running/launching a grassroots campaign is a tedious and all-consuming effort.
It is not as easy as it sounds and needs huge investment of time and effort before your cause even bears a semblance of coming to fruition. You can always sign up at your local grassroots community to help โ it will give you an idea of what exactly running a grassroots campaign entails. Good luck!

The term โcyber securityโ makes you think of an action movie where a team of tech-savvy pros embark on a mission to save the day from behind their computer screens. The real work of cyber security pros might not be quite that exciting, but it is still an incredibly important job in the digital age.
So whatโs the real cyber security job description? โCyber security professionals ensure the confidentiality, integrity and availability of all data across the organization,โ saysย Greg Scott, cyber security professional and author.
Thereโs more to working in cyber security than meets the eye. Weโre diving deep into the cyber security job description so you can determine whether you might have a future in this essential tech career.
The importance of cyber security
Cyber security is all about protecting dataโbut why is data such a big deal? โEvery organization needs data to operate,โ Scott says. Data is the foundation of business in the digital age. It includes everything from important financial information to personal medical histories to the type of cat food customers buy.
โSecurity is as strong as the weakest link,โ says Jamie Cambell, cyber security expert and founder of consumer digital privacy websiteย GoBestVPN. โIf a billion-dollar company didnโt have proper security measures, it simply could not operate. There are too many hacking attacks.โ
Cyber security professionals are the technology experts who keep hackers at bay, ideally by preventing attacks from happening in the first place. โThe primary role of a cybersecurity professional is more proactive than reactive,โ Cambell says. Data is growing more important as organizations across industries rely on cyber security experts to keep their data safe and secure.
Cyber security job duties
Cyber security experts juggle a variety of daily job duties to accomplish their mission of protecting data. Their most common job duties include โdesigning and implementing security measuresโtaking into account a companyโs security risksโand installing, properly configuring and regularly updating security software,โ says Dmitry Kurskov, director of information security atย ScienceSoft. He adds that cyber security specialists are also responsible for creating a plan of action in case security breaches do occur.
These tech professionals must research new technology and stay up to date on cyber security trends, according to theย Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).1ย Cyber security specialists also actively monitor the safety of their organizationโs information and conduct tests to find any weaknesses in their systems.
Working in cyber security doesnโt always mean youโll be behind a screen, however. โSome cybersecurity professionals lean on the social sideโthey are less โtechnicalโ and focus more on securing things on a human level,โ Cambell says. This aspect of the job includes updating employees on security protocols, working to prevent a type of attack called โsocial engineeringโโattacks that rely more on human error than technical know-howโand collaborating with company executives to create a security plan.
Cyber security work environment
Careers in cyber security can be found in nearly every industry, thanks to organizationsโ widespread use of data. Although 28 percent of information security analysts work in the computer systems industry, others can be found working in finance and insurance, company management or administrative and support services, according to theย BLS.1
Most cyber security workdays follow the typical 9 to 5 pattern youโll find in many careers. That said, cyber criminals donโt exactly clock out after business hours. This means many of these tech pros may also need to be on call on nights or weekends in case of an after-hours security breach.
Cyber security skills
You might be surprised to learn that finding success in a cyber security career isnโt all about technical ability. โItโs not enough for a cybersecurity professional to be technically skilled,โ Kurskov says.
Transferable skills, like communication and decision-making, are equally important. Being able to think on your feet and show good judgment are especially valuable in this field. โSecurity pros should always be ready to react to cyber-related incidents quickly, make hardโand preferably correctโdecisions taking into consideration all security risks and potential consequences these decisions may cause,โ Kurskov says.
Donโt underestimate the skills and experience you already have that could be beneficial in cyber security! We analyzed nearly 138,000 cyber security job postings to bring you the top skills real employers are looking for.

Cyber security training and education
Cyber security professionals arenโt born with the technical skills listed above. It takes specialized training and education to prepare them for the demands of the workplace. Theย BLSย reports that most employers want to see aย Bachelorโs degree in Cyber Security, computer science or another related field.1
The training doesnโt stop there, however. Thanks to the continuous development of new technology, cyber security specialists will need continuing education to keep up with best practices. Some employers want their cyber security pros to be certified, proving that they keep their skills sharp and have the specific knowledge needed on the job.
These are some of the in-demand certifications for cyber security professionals:

While technical skills will help your resume meet employersโ baseline needs and hopefully get you in a position to ace an interview, yourย transferable skillsโlike problem-solving, communication and teamwork abilityโwill help you navigate and excel in your career beyond that point.
But donโt be discouraged if you donโt have many of the technical skills listed above. These are the kind of skills that you can gain by earning aย Network Systems Administration degree.ย
Education and experience requirements for network administrators
While a degree will certainly help bring your technical abilities up to par, itโs fair to wonder if you could find your way into one of these positions without a formal education. The short answer to that question? Maybeโbut it could pose challenges depending on your background.
Our analysis of network administrator job postings found that 90 percent of positions were seeking candidates with an associateโs degree at a minimum.3 Experience is also a big factorโthis role isnโt typically entry-level and most candidates will likely need a fair amount of IT and networking experience to be considered a top tier option. Our job posting analysis found that just 23 percent of job postings were seeking candidates with 0-2 years of experience, compared to the 57 percent seeking 3-5 years of experience.3
In addition to formal education, network admin hopefuls should consider pursuingย professional certificationsย as well.
Beyond the network administrator job description
You can only tell so much from a formal job description on paper. There are some things you can only learn from experience. Take advantage of this firsthand insight from experienced professionals.
1. Donโt discount your customer service skills
Working as a network administrator isnโt all technical skills and network systems. Working with network users to solve problems and find solutions for stakeholders while providing insight on network-wide issues requires having strong people-skills. Being friendly and personable can go a long way when working with other IT staff and with network users.
โThe part [of this job] many people struggle with is the customer-facing skills,โ says David Moise, president ofย Decide Consulting. โYou do not get parodied on Saturday Night Live without there being some truth to it.โ
Moise says heโs noticed some progressive managed service providers sending their network staff to โDisney-styleโ customer service training to improve their communication skills and responsiveness. Itโs clear a greater emphasis is being placed on staff who can effectively navigate personal interactions.
2. Play the long game
While jobs in the tech industry are thriving right now and will likely continue to, that doesnโt mean they wonโt change. โFocus on the skills that will be in demand over the next 10 years,โ encourages Moise. If you see a demand for cyber security increasing in your field, make sure youโre grabbing the IT tickets pertaining to security. Become the go-to security expert and work to earn a job title that reflects that.
Since you wonโt likely be a network administrator forever keep an eye out for other IT positions with similar duties and needed skills from DevOps engineer, site reliability engineer, cloud hosting and systems engineer. As the technology world quickly evolves, keep your eyes peeled for whatโs coming and position yourself accordingly.
3. Stay up-to-date
In order to keep your skillset ready for whatever the field has in store in the next few years, youโll need stay on top of new advances.
โThereโs no magic to it,โ says Andy Lipnitski, IT Director atย ScienceSoft. Simply keep up with news outletsโ tech sections and blogs from the worldโs leading network companies. Observe market trends and try out technologies that are gaining popularity. โIf thereโs a new technology on the market, donโt hesitate to experiment with it.โ
4. Certifications matter
While there are more and more tech jobs available, the skills needed for each are becoming more specialized, says Moise. Certifications are often the most obvious way you can prove knowledge to a potential employer. Earning them will help you keep pace with skills and changes in the field and help demonstrate you have a deep knowledge base for hardware components and operating systems.
The Rasmussen Collegeย Network Systems Administration degreeย will prepare you to sit for industry certifications like:
Ciscoยฎ CCENT
CompTIAยฎ A+ย (parts 1 and 2)
CompTIA Linux+
CompTIA Network+
CompTIA Security+
Microsoftยฎ MCSA Windows 10
Start your career in network administration
Chances are high that if youโve read through to the end, youโre still interested in possibly becoming a network administrator. Thatโs great! The tech world is in need of more skilled and personable individuals.
Now that you know more about the job duties and the factors you may not find in the job descriptions, maybe youโre curious about the process to actually become a network administrator. Find out in our article,ย โHow to Become a Network Administrator: The Info You Need to Know.โ
It really does seem like cyber security is impossible to ignore these days. Andย cyber security experts insistย that it will be more and more dangerous for companies to ignore growing digital threats. If youโve looked into cyber security before, you know how critical this role is becoming in todayโs society.
But critical doesnโt necessarily mean itโs a good career choice. You want to get a wide-angle view of working in cyber security to see whether an investment in pursuing this career path appeals to you.
Youโve come to the right placeโwe asked professionals in the cyber security field to weigh in on why they chose this career and what it could offer to career hopefuls in the future.
So, why study cyber security?
โIโve been in cybersecurity since, well, the beginning of cybersecurity,โ says George Kamis, CTO ofย Forcepoint. โAnd what I really like about this field is that itโs continuously changing. It seems like every day thereโs another news headline about a cyberattack.โ
While some like Kamis may love the challenge of securing networks from continually shifting threats and attack approaches, thatโs not all there is to like. Read on to learn what else Kamis and others had to share.
1. Our network connectivity is only growing
The learning curve for organizations adapting to the digital world is steep even now. And it doesnโt show any sign of tapering off. โThe world is only becoming more networked,โ says Allan Buxton, director of forensics atย Secure Forensics.
Buxton explains that even cyber security professionals are constantly learning to keep up with the speed of attacks and change. For instance, Buxton points to the computing systems in newer vehicles needing cyber security reviewโsomething that would barely register as an area of concern 20 years ago.
โNew fields of discipline will emergeโitโs not a field where you can get your degree, go to work, and never have to take a class again,โ Buxton says.
More and more household objects are becoming part of theย Internet of Thingsย (IoT) and with each comes new challenges to counter and best practices to absorbโand with that can come opportunities.
โThere will always be attackers looking to take advantage of insecure implementations, so thereโs a job out there for you if you commit to the profession.โ
2. Job opportunities are projected to grow substantially
Speaking of opportunities, these careers are on the rise with theย Bureau of Labor Statisticsย projecting a 28 percent growth in employment of information security analysts through 2026โa rate much faster than the national average.1ย One of the primary drivers of this growth is the increasing prevalence of cyberattacks.
Great demand doesnโt always equal opportunity where you are, however. IT and cyber governance expert Elvis Moreland points out that even though the job market in general is good for this field, every metropolitan area will be a little different. Sites likeย Cyber Seekย can give you more information on what the cybersecurity needs are in the areas you are considering.
3. Specialties within cyber security are increasing
For a long while, IT departments basically had cyber security duties looped into their work. While it remains closely tied with IT, cyber security is now an established field all to itselfโand a variety of roles and needs are developing all the time.
โI enjoy the emerging professionalism of the field,โ Moreland says. โSimilar to industries like healthcare, we have specialties in governance, engineering, assessment, risk management, compliance, architecture, operations, eDiscovery, forensics, etc. โฆโ
These specialties just create more options for professionals in the field to truly spend time working on what they like best and developing a deep skill set in specific areas.
4. This job can be hard to outsource
When it comes to securing assets and warding off breaches that could bring down a companyโfew organizations are willing to roll the dice with outsourcing. While obviously thereโs no guarantee this will remain true forever, Buxton says the work of information security professionals, particularly when well-established in larger organizations, is relatively tricky to outsource.
This makes many in-house cyber security professionals well-positioned for job security. This should also give information security professionals working for managed service providers (specialized cybersecurity businesses with multiple clients) some peace of mind as wellโitโs relatively โstickyโ work and clients arenโt likely to hop from provider to provider frequently.
5. You get to be a hero sometimes
โIโm in this career because, honestly, I found it more interesting than design or administration,โ Buxton says. โIt can be rewarding work, especially when you stop someone from suffering harm, or track down an attacker for real-world consequences.โ
Working in information technology is in a way similar to working as a refereeโmost donโt notice you when youโre doing a good job as things are just working the way they should. While cyber security work still largely follows this mold, there are certainly times where the nature of your work can add some excitement (and recognition) for your day-to-day efforts. Even when a job well-done flies under the radar, you know that your work directly impacts peopleโs security and thwarts criminal endeavors.
6. You have multiple viable educational paths
Since cyber security is still pretty new, the industry isnโt weighed down by expectations of how the education path should look. While aย Cyber Security Bachelorโs degreeย is definitely a strong option, Moreland says thereโs still a path into the field for those withย associateโs degrees in ITโparticularly those that focus on security, networking, systems management or even programming.
โThe key to being a successful security professional in and around IT arenas is to build a foundation in IT and the fundamentals of security,โ Moreland explains. โThat is also why I recommend obtaining theย CompTIA Network+ยฎ,ย ย Security+ยฎ, and theย (ISC)2ย SSCPยฎ certifications as part of a comprehensive package.โ
If you combine education, experience and up-to-dateย cyber security certifications, Moreland says your resume starts getting pretty unbeatable.
7. Itโs a career of consistent change
โWhat I love most is that things consistently change,โ Buxton says. โAlthough the fundamentals lastโthe nuances and details change almost daily.โ Buxton says exploits are patched, zero days are discovered, and insiders find new ways to steal data on a regular basis.
โIn my field, OEMs and software publishers find new ways to prevent acquisition or review of user data, even though they track and retain more user activity now than ever before,โ Buxton explains. โIt’s a challenge that can only be met with a commitment to learning.โ
This environment also favors people who know how to keep learning. Adam Bobrow, founder and CEO ofย Foresight Resilience Strategies, plans to recruit junior staff into cybersecurity analyst positions that mostly require critical thinking skills and communication over technical skills.
โAt the same time, we will help junior employees to build their technical expertise and accumulate certifications,โ Bobrow says. โThe goal is to prepare them for opportunities in cybersecurity without requiring them to start with technical skills that could be difficult to acquire in the classroom.โ
8. You get to solve complex technical puzzles
โI like figuring out how to break things and stop things from breaking, which I think was actually a perfect segue into cybersecurity,โ Kamis says. He explains that cyber security is like a puzzle where you have to consider how you could break into a system and how you could stop a system from being broken into all at once.
โFrom the beginning I realized that I enjoyed solving that puzzle from both sides,โ Kamis says.
If youโre the type to love getting to the bottom of logical and technical challenges to find satisfactory solutions, Kamis says cyber security can be an appealing career option.
Cyber security professionals are in demand
โThere is no question that every organization will only grow more reliant on data and the systems that store, transmit, and analyze it over the coming decades,โ Bobrow says. He adds that the growing adoption of IoT technologies will push the amount of data to be analyzed, manipulated and protected to grow at unprecedented rates.

That being said, zooming in a little closer is a necessary move if you want to place yourself on a career path in technology. Which route will you choose, and what will you need to succeed? If you find yourself wanting to compare and contrast computer science versus cyber securityโread on! These two career paths offer a myriad of potential benefits and opportunities.
Itโs just a matter of deciding where to startโso letโs dive in.
Computer science vs. cyber security: The basics
The first thing to note when discussing computer science and cyber security is that this isnโt quite an apples to apples comparison. Computer science is a broadly applicable field of study thatโs relatively more established, whereas cyber security is more narrowly focused, with an academic discipline that dives deep into a subset of specialized skills.
Computer science has been an area of study for a long time and creates professionals who go into aย wide range of careers. Computer science professionals in these roles might analyze problems to develop solutions involving computer hardware and software, apply theoretical expertise to create new technology, or design computers and the software that runs them.
They go by many names, butย professionals who work in cyber securityย typically develop plans to safeguard computer files against modification, destruction, or disclosure; monitor current reports of computer viruses; encrypt data transmissions and erect firewalls; and perform risk assessments and execute tests of data processing system to ensure functioning of data processing activities and security measures.

Choosing a specific degree will come down to the type of work youโd most like to do. Computer science degrees obviously provide a solid foundation for careers that rely heavily on computer science, programming and software development. But what should you study if you are interested in cyber security?
This is one of the major points of divergence between the two fieldsโcomputer science is a fairly well-established academic subject, while cyber security is a relatively new discipline. This means many experienced professionals in the field of cyber security tend to have academic backgrounds in broader subjects like information technology. These professionals often made the transition into cyber security through a combination of work experience, personal research and supplementalย cyber security certificationsย to round out their qualifications.ย
While this approach to paving their own way into the field is certainly commendable, the need for it is beginning to steadily fade as more cyber security degree programs are created to meet the demands of the market. โI would strongly recommend exploring higher education institutions that offer a two or four year degree in degree in cyber security,โ says Sharon Rosenman, vice president of marketing forย Cyberbit. โUniversities that have created cyber security degrees have current and more well-rounded curriculum.โ

Today, high school students seem more likely to have learned coding than cursive.ย Several statesย have formally adopted policies to give students access to computer science coursesโwith some even extending these offerings to middle and elementary school students! This shouldnโt come as surprise, though. Demand for tech-savvy professionals is clearly strong and doesnโt appear to be losing steam any time soon. Nearly every company relies on computer programs, applications or other underlying systems in some way. In fact, employment of software developers is projected to increase by 21 percent through 2028โmore than four times the national average, according to theย U.S. Bureau of Labor Statisticsย (BLS).1
You know the employment opportunities are out there. But how do you know if you have what it takes for becoming a software developer? Weโve asked tech pros to identify some of the common characteristics found in successful developers. But before we get too far along, letโs first flesh out the details of what you might find in a software developerโs job description.
What does a software developer do?
Software developers are the creative forces behind the apps and programs you use dailyโfrom your email to social media or even the underlying operating systems that allows all those programs to run.
Generally, software developers, focus on either application or system development.ย Software application developersย design and develop computer and mobile applications that perform specific functions whileย systems software developersย create the operating systems that support these other programs or app. Industries like the medical field, the military and the industrial goods sector often enlist systems software developers to design and build new operating systems.
No matter which path you end up taking, youโll utilize the same traitsโlike analytical thinking, creativity and problem-solving. But the list doesnโt end there. We enlisted the experts to expand on some characteristics many successful software developers share.
You should consider becoming a software developer ifโฆ
1. You like working with people
Contrary to popular belief, software developers donโt spend all of their time holed up in a dark room while their eyes glaze over from prolonged screen staring. While there are certainly times when developers work alone to create their part of a project, there is a lot of time spent collaborating with others on the team, communicating about goals and strategies, and working with others to solve a problem.
โIn my company, junior developers often fix senior developers’ code and that’s totally okay,โ says Mark Tinnelly, software developer atย CardioTech. โNobody knows everything, and we work together to share and learn from each other.โ Both giving and receiving critique is a key component to making sure the technology youโre developing meets the userโs needs.
In addition to working with other software developers, youโll be collaborating with stakeholders and clients to make sure their goals are met and theyโre kept up to date with the progress of the project. โNot only is collaboration is one of the most under-looked responsibilities of a software developer, but in many software positions identifying requirements from stakeholders or clients is half of the job,โ says Colin Ma, current lead strategistย Study Prep Loungeย and former technology consultant.
Though software development projects can take a long time, effective collaboration can make them run smoother and make reaching the end goal even more rewarding.
2. You have a knack for problem solving
A big part of coding is creating technology that solves a userโs problem. Thereโs also a lot of problem solving involved in the nitty gritty of the actual work in software development. You likely have a knack for problem solving if youโre apt to see connections between pieces that are not obviously connected.
If you get a thrill from looking at an issue, trying to figure out which angle to approach it from, and you donโt get discouraged along the way, software development might be a great career fit for you.
Every day, software developers solve problemsโfrom writing code to making sure an application functions well in each architecture level. โYou need to enjoy problem solving to enjoy what youโll be doing for 8 hours a day,โ advises Paul Kim, lead developer atย Maples Design.
3. Youโre musically inclined
Scientists have continuouslyย drawn connectionsย between those who love music and those who have a talent for math. While this link is still up for debate, it is easy to see how reading musical notes is similar to coding. Like learning a new language, it takes skill and plenty of practice.
Musicians need both analytical skills and an intuitive nature to improvise musicโwhich can also serve them well when designing a new software system or mobile app. Theyโre predisposed to ask questions like โhowโ and โwhy,โ which can help them create a better product.
โIf you like to play an instrument and read notes, you are already halfway there,โ says former software developer, Alessandro Marianantoni. Like reading or composing music, software development has a lot to do withย recognizing and manipulating patterns.
Youโll also notice similarities between musicians and software developers in the way they collaborate as well. โItโs like playing in a band,โ says Jerry Anderson, Software Engineer atย Renty.ae. โTogether itโs more complicated, but the result is far more powerful.โ
4. You like to see order in things
Do you arrange the dishes in your cupboards just so? Do you like the feeling of a clean, tidy, structured room? Good news! Software development is all about order and ensuring applications take steps in an order that makes logical sense.
โHaving a knack for organization gives you a head start in spotting potential ways to improve your code,โ notes Kim. Even if you donโt feel like your organizational skills are top notch right now, you can develop stronger organizational tendencies as you go through your classes and school. It doesnโt hurt to start developing routines and systems to help you get more organized in your daily life.
Whether your crayons were arranged in rainbow order as a child, or you get a little annoyed by your sisterโs messy craft drawer, if you like organization, you might find success in software development.
5. Trying new things gives you a thrill
โTechnology moves at an incredibly fast pace, and a software developer must stay on top of things and adapt to these changes,โ explains Tinnelly.
From changes in coding to company requirements, to the particulars features users want in their software, developers are constantly adapting and melding into new ways of doing things. Youโll need to stay on top of industry news, key metrics, and basics of project management and flow.
As a software developer, you canโt wait around for someone else to take initiative and teach you what you need to know. โGreat developers will find different resources or talk to the right people and find the solution no matter what,โ says Sanjay Patoliya ofย Teclogiq. This may mean doing research, seeking out mentors, courses or workshops to learn a new skill on your own. Chances are both the skill and the demonstration of your drive will go far.
6. You stay intrinsically motivated
Thereโs no doubt about itโcoding can be tricky work. Not only are you continuously solving problems and adapting to new changes, but youโre also memorizing code, remembering company protocol and backtracking to fix mistakes you made.
โ[Itโs having the] willpower to stay motivated even when the going gets tough,โ says Tinnelly. โWhen you learn to code, there will be a point where you’ll feel discouraged because of all the mistakes you make. But you have to stay focusedโฆitโs a game of patience.โ
Software development can be finickyโportions of code that seemingly work perfectly on their own can go completely off the rails when interfacing with other code. Fixing these issues can take a fair amount of trial and error, so a natural sense of determination can be a big plus.
7. You enjoy puzzles and strategy
Were you the one who spent hours at the kitchen table mulling over that 10,000-piece puzzle? Coding is all about putting together the pieces of an enigmaโcreating a brand new program or solving problems from an old one. Writing new code often means writing, testing and then revising. There are often many moving pieces.
โSometimes coding is about having a certain number of pieces and putting them in the right order,โ explains Marianantoni.
Like those giant, kitchen-table puzzles take persistence, so does software development. A single project can take weeks, months and even years. If you like coming up with strategic solutions and enjoy a long game, becoming a software developer could be a perfect fit for you.
8. You love Technology
It may seem like a no brainer, but loving technology is a must for software developers. This is a field with people consumed by new games, programs and gadgets. But this infatuation isnโt just based on an appreciation for exciting new features or capabilitiesโthereโs also the thrill of figuring out how all this new stuff works! Software developers are natural tinkerers and like to find ways to implement the latest and greatest innovations to their repertoire.
Can you see yourself as a software developer?
Do you see any of those qualities in yourself? If so, you may be a natural fit for working in software development. Of course, it takes more than natural tendencies to make it as a software developerโyou’ll need formal training as well. To learn more about how Rasmussen College can help you get there, visit theย Software Application Development program page.

We connected with professional software developers across the country and gathered government data to help you answer this very question. If youโre interested in a sneak peek of the career life of a software developer, then read on.
What is a software developer, exactly?
You know that smartphone app you rely on? That computer game that kept you transfixed for hours as a kid? That program that helps you budget and track expenditures? Software developers created all of them.
Software developers are the creative, brainstorming geniuses behind computer programs. While some software developers may focus on a specific program or app, others create giant networks or underlying systems that help trigger and power other programs. This is why there are two main classifications of developers: software applications developers and systems software developers.
What do software applications developers do?
According to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), developers in this sector are responsible for designing computer or mobile applications.1 The nature of their work is largely focused on creating for consumers. This involves understanding user needs, developing software solutions, monitoring performance and modifying programs as needed.
What do systems software developers do?
These professionals are focused on operating systems-level software, compilers and network distribution software, as outlined by the DOL.1 This role is more geared toward designing solutions for enterprise organizations. This includes developing software for medical, industrial, military, communications, aerospace, business, scientific and general computing applications.
What are some common software developer job duties?
Much of the actual creation of software programs happens through the writing of code, and software developers oversee that. Depending on the company where they work, a software developer will analyze the needs of the user and then create, test and develop software that will solve a problem, provide entertainment or simply make life easier for that target market.
After mapping out the design, creating flowcharts and drafting out each step of the process, developers will build diagrams and models to instruct programmers how to write the code for the program.
Other job duties include mapping out the software to have on record for future upgrades and enhancements, testing the software, and collaborating with other computer specialists to make sure the software is top notch and functioning properly.
What skills does a software developer need?
Not only are software developers in charge of outlining and creating the code and design for a program, but these types of careers generally involve a lot of collaboration between various stakeholders. Itโs important for a software developer to have a combination of technical know-how and excellent interpersonal skills.
1. Problem-solving
The whole point of developing software is to create programs that solve the userโs problem. If youโre the type who tends to identify issues and figure out the best way to approach a solution, you may be a perfect fit for a software development career. Not only that, but programming alone is often an exercise in problem-solving and troubleshootingโbeing able to patiently and strategically tackle potential bugs or issues in code is a big part of their work.
2. Teamwork
Contrary to whatโs commonly assumed, software developers arenโt secluded at their desk with no contact with the outside world. In reality, they spend a lot of time teaming up with other developers and programmers to create a prime product for the user. Great communication, empathy and a knack for collaborating with others is a must.
3. Analytical and strategic
Coding and software are enigmas of a sort, and if youโre someone who likes solving a mystery by looking at the big picture as well as the smaller steps along the way, youโll be right at home developing software. Thereโs a lot of thoughtful planning that goes into creating these types of programs. If you can figure out the fastest or most efficient path from point A to point B, the world of software development will welcome you with open arms.
4. Intrinsic motivation
Creating software can be tricky, tedious work, so itโs important that you donโt get bogged down or discouraged when you donโt succeed the first time you try something. If youโre the type of person who is naturally determined to finish everything you start, youโll be well-suited for a career in software development.
Where do software developers work?
Job opportunities for software developers are vast and varied. Software applications developers held just over 831,000 jobs in 2016, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).2 There were about 425,000 positions for systems software developers in that same year, equating more than 1.25 million opportunities for software developers.2

What are some characteristics of a good web developer?
There are a few inherent qualities shared by many successful web developers. After speaking with professionals in the industry, we identified a few transferable skills that play a pivotal role in the day-to-day operations of the job.
1. Good communication skills
Web developers must work with multiple members of an organization to ensure everyoneโs goals are being met through the website. Itโs important to maintain open lines of communication and be able to translate technical jargon into laymanโs terms for other team members.
If you have children, youโve probably become a skilled amplifier when trying to explain complex subjects to your curious kiddos. If you can do a decent job of explaining why the sky is blue to a 5-year-old, you should have a pretty good handle on simplifying the language used to describe a technical problem to a client.
2. Love of learning
To make it as a web developer, youโll need to have a natural curiosity. If youโre the type to scour YouTube and web developer blogs for tutorials and inspiration, and just canโt wait to jump in and start learning new techniques, youโre on the right track.
New scripts, widgets and designs are released daily so web developers must stay up to date to remain relevant in the industry. At first it might seem daunting trying to keep up on all of this, but often these new tools are created to make things easierโwhich provides a nice incentive for the effort.
3. Patience
A website is never fully complete. Often, client work will go back and forth and the smallest details will require tedious nurturing, according to Sid Savara, senior web developer at Honolulu-basedย Red Aloha. When minute changes or updates are requested, itโs important to remain patient. This also reinforces the need for strong communication skills; the better you are able to communicate, the less likely you are to have a never-ending development process.
4. Perfectionism
โMost web developers Iโve encountered [suffer from] borderline obsessive compulsive disorder when it comes to checking and double-checking their code,โ says Sam Mc Roberts, CEO of Seattle-basedย VUDU Marketing.
It is critical for web developers to employ this extreme attention to detail, according to Mc Roberts. One small mistake can break an entire website, so he says thereโs a very limited margin for error for web developers when the time comes to launch a new site or page.
What web development skills do you need to succeed in the field?

How do you become a web developer?
Now that youโre aware of the skills needed to succeed as a web developer, letโs talk about the education and training that will help you land a job. The educational requirements vary depending on the work setting, according to the BLS, but the most common requirement is an associateโs degree.1
Itโs true that you can teach yourself to code online but remember that thereโs much more to web development than purely coding. A formal education will help you master your programming skills, gain practical hands-on training and prepare you to successfully work with clients and find creative solutions to business challenges.
What are some common misconceptions about web development?
Now that you have an idea of what a web developer does, itโs important to know what a web developer does not do. We want to clear up any misconceptions about this career before you decide whether itโs right for you.
1. Web development is not necessarily web design
One of the biggest misnomers out there is that web development is synonymous with web design, which is untrue according to Oleg Korneitchouk, director of web development at New Jersey-basedย SmartSites. He says that development is taking the designerโs work and turning it into a functional website.
Designers are the creative individuals who are focused on the overall look and feel of a website; while developers are the analytical individuals who concentrate on the general performance aspects of the site. Some of this confusion may stem from the close relationship between front-end development and web design. Many web designers also learn the skills of front-end developers in order to become more well-rounded.
2. You are never โfinishedโ with a website
A website is like a plant that needs constant nurturing. Just when you think itโs perfect, youโll find a glitch that needs to be fixed or an element that the client wants added. Technology is constantly evolving so there will always be improvements to be made. Think of it this way: Even if someone created the โperfectโ website in 2005, that site will still look very dated and could have several security or structural deficiencies in the back end when compared to the latest and greatest sites of today.
3. Web developers do more than just write code
The truth is that web developers donโt just sit and stare at a computer screen all day. While writing code is a big part of the job, interacting with designers, illustrators, copywriters and other personnel involved in the planning process is an essential piece of the puzzle.
Web developers also analyze website performance and work with website stakeholders to prioritize strategic updates and improvements. On top of that, itโs crucial for them to spend time researching new techniques and technologies.

It might seem like a simple question, but thereโs a lot that goes into answering it. You might start by focusing on the benefits it could bring you personally. You might talk about how computer science-related jobs are appealing in their versatility, earning potential and demand. You might hear about all of the things we use on a daily basis today that were only created because of computer science.
But what you donโt often hear about as often is the altruistic side of computer science and the work professionals in this field do to make the world a better place.
If youโre looking to leverage your love of technology to make a difference, then rest assured. Computer science is an incredible career choice for someone who wants to change the world.
โSocieties will die if they don’t continue to innovate,โ says Werner Krebs, CEO of Acculation. Krebs says technologies are neither good nor evil on their own, but, in the right hands, can become powerful benefits to society. โWe need bright and ethical people to understand our best and most powerful technologies to ensure they are used for good.โ
If you want some concrete examples of just how much computer science benefits society, you came to the right place. We enlisted tech professionals to share with us how their daily work helps people and plays a vital role in their communities.
Computer science benefits society byโฆ
1. Directly meeting needs
โSince my first day in computer science, I’ve been trying to have a positive impact on society,โ says Thibault Rihet, software engineer at Trialog. Rihet explains that computer scientists can easily get into direct applications that address societal issues like poverty, unemployment, climate change and more.
Rihet explains that France is utilizing startups by assigning teams to create solutions when a public agent identifies a problem. Then the solutions go live nationally. This approach allows computer scientists and other technology professionals to jump in and meet needs as they arise in their communities.
Sites like DataKind, Taproot and Code Alliance can be excellent resources for computer scientists who want to put their skills to work for global issues, according to Rihet. These platforms allow a wide array of tech professionals to create, support and execute projects that change lives.
There are also indirect benefits from the tools computer scientists build, Rihet points out. Consider charities that are now able to streamline their donations, or crowdfunded campaigns that can gather a following and financial backing.
2. Empowering people who are often overlooked
โAn amazing benefit of software is that it can be freely distributed to everyone, thanks to open-source contributors,โ Rihet says. โThis fact truly empowers people.โ When tools to build revenue and solve business problems are available to everyoneโit can level the playing field.
For example, finding clients can be an expensive endeavor. If you are a service provider coming to your business without a ton of extra cash, it can be hard to stay afloat. Samantha Hugo, CEO of Hugomatica, says computer science can make a huge difference here.
โFor example, beauticians often do not determine their own work hours or find their own clients because they don’t know how.โ Seeing this need, Hugoโs company created an app that allows beauticians to recruit their own clients and set their own schedules. โAs a women-owned company, we try to find apps that are needed and that will help people in areas that have been overlooked by most coders.โ
3. Paving the way for a more equitable world
Computer science can really help level the playing field in terms of inexpensive solutions. But Hugo also points out that it can be an equalizer in other ways. Though technology as an industry has an under representation of women and racial minorities, Hugo sees computer science as a tool for societal re-balance when it comes to gender identity, background, ethnicity and beyond. Code is codeโand if youโve created something genuinely useful, your background isnโt going to hold you back.
โThe App Store has the same requirements for all developers,โ she points out. Hugo says it is a positive step for society that computers are blind to everything but the code.
4. Accelerating healthcare progress
Healthcare tends to be a pretty high priority when you consider how to improve peopleโs lives.
One of the most exciting facets of computer science is its power to improve and accelerate every other field. โData science and artificial intelligence (AI) as subsets of computer science allow people and organizations to accelerate and โprepackage thought.โ In this way, computer science and artificial intelligence can make any other discipline many, many times better.โ
Genomics and personalized medicine are an excellent example of how computer science-driven technologies are accelerating healthcare progress. The genome sequencing process that powers this frontier of medicine used to cost tens of millions of dollars to complete, but machine-learning techniques and improved computing power have dropped costs substantially.
5. Furthering education
Can you imagine modern education without computer software or the internet? Whether youโre taking a class online, researching for a paper or sharing work via the cloud, computer science pros have helped make this possible.
E-learning platforms and applications give students new tools to problem-solve and study, which has changed the academic world. The ability to take classes online is also a huge benefit for the worldโas it creates access to education for students whose locations, abilities or finances were a barrier.
6. Expanding communication
โThe biggest contribution computer science has made is in the field of communication,โ says Manonit Nand, teacher and system administrator at the Mayoor School. โComputer Science has made the whole world a very small placeโavailable at your fingertips now.โ
Nand mentions social media, video calling and chatting appsโeven the applications that allow you to share documents and photos with someone else long-distance. These capacities have completely revolutionized the workforce.
7. Predicting and avoiding catastrophes
Computer science is scalingโand scaling very fast for that matter, according to Nand. Applying computer science to prediction can have a huge impact on the world. โWe are predicting human behavior; we are predicting climates, seasons, ocean currents, etc.โ Nand says.
With these tools, we can predict everything from an incoming tsunami to the outbreak pattern of a pathogen. In that way, some of the most life-saving work that happens in our world relies on computer scientists. Computer science is even in action when predicting the trajectory of dangerous comets near our planet.
8. Positively impacting every area of society
Though itโs not always hands-on, almost every aspect of societyโfrom family-owned businesses needing digital protection to homeless shelters needing a way to streamline their volunteer baseโrelies on the innovations spurred by computer science professionals.
โComputer science is a noble profession without which todayโs world would come to a complete halt,โ and says. When it comes to finding a career that allows you to positively benefit the world around you, look no further than computer science
How will you make a difference?
Thereโs no denying itโthe reach of computer science is extensive. And weโre only just scratching the surface with what good can come from it!

Common job titles: Business analyst, business systems analyst, IT analyst, information systems analyst
What do computer systems analysts do?
Computer systems analysts roles are so versatile that there are many ways to answer this question. But at a high level, theyโre the individuals responsible for merging business needs with IT initiatives. They use their expertise to analyze, improve and plan IT systems in order to meet the specifications needed for a business process.
So what does that look like? Theyโll spend a considerable amount of time meeting with the โbusiness sideโ of an organization gathering information about organizational needsโHow will this system be used? Will this need to work at a larger scale in the future? Will this need to connect with other systems? Once the specifications are determined, computer systems analysts will work with the technical teams to develop plans for how theyโll deploy technology to meet those needs.
3. Systems software developer
Projected growth (2018โ2028): 10 percent (faster than average)2
Median annual salary (2018): $110,0002
Common job titles: Software architect, software developer, systems engineer, software engineer
What do systems software developers do?
Systems software developers have quite a bit in common with software application developers. They use their knowledge of programming, mathematics and computational theory to develop software to meet a specific need. That said, the work of a systems software developer is often focused on creating or modifying things like entire operating systems (Windowsยฎ being a prominent example) or industry-specific software systems.
With Microsoft and Apple dominating the desktop computing scene for operating systems, you might think a role like this would have a very narrow range of potential opportunities. The reality is that many systems software developers work for employers or clients that need specialized software the greater public would likely never see.
Industries like financial services, telecommunications, aerospace engineering and law firms all commonly employ systems software developers. Another growth area springs from the growing number of devices with internet connectivityโthat touch screen menu on your fancy new refrigerator required someone to design the interface and the underlying system controlling it.
4. Web developer

increasingly, teachers find themselves expected to teach subjects which are beyond their areas of specialism. Whilst you may embrace the challenge, it can feel somewhat daunting. To provide you with some ideas and support, weโve listed twelve tips below to help you increase your knowledge and confidence when teaching a subject as a non-specialist.
1. Remember that first and foremost youโre a good teacher! If you are a competent, confident teacher of one subject then youโre already half way towards being a competent teacher in a new subject, no matter how far removed it is from your specialism. Having a good working knowledge of how to manage a class and how to engage and inspire your learners is a great basis for teaching any subject โ donโt lose sight of that!
2. Donโt underestimate the challenge However, donโt be overly confident either. When the non-specialist subject we add to our timetable is relatively closely aligned to our area of expertise there can be a tendency to assume that the switch will be straightforward. If, for example, as an art teacher weโre asked to teach photography or fashion, or as a geography teacher weโre asked to teach history. Sometimes even subjects that are closely aligned in the curriculum can require quite different skill sets of students and may need a different focus and approach in your lessons.
3. Find a โbuddyโ Fine someone who has taught your non-specialist subject before and ask if you can adopt them as a mentor. Having someone who you can turn to when youโre struggling can really increase your confidence.
4. Team teach If possible, ask your buddy if you can observe them teaching โ or perhaps you can consider team teaching trickier parts of the curriculum as you approach them for the first time. This can be a great way to draw on the knowledge of more experienced colleagues and can also be beneficial to students who experience two different approaches in the classroom.
5. Understand the mark scheme Even if youโre teaching at a lower key stage which is not examined, having a good understanding of the success criteria of exams that students are eventually working towards can help you to ensure students develop the appropriate knowledge and skills throughout their exposure to the subject.
6. Ask colleagues for schemes of work, lesson plans and resources Donโt reinvent the wheel. There may be existing schemes of work or resources that are held centrally in the department or that colleagues, either in your own school or another, have developed for teaching the subject. Youโll want to make sure youโre familiar with the plans, adapt them to suit your style and to best meet the needs of your cohort. There are also some great lesson plans available online which could provide you with some inspiration.
7. Join the subject association or online forums or chats If your new subject has an association, itโs worth considering joining. This can be a great way to access expertise and resources which youโll find valuable. Check whether your department already has a school or group membership to the association or ask if theyโd be willing to cover the fee for you to join in order to provide you with some support. Sometimes you can join an associationโs mailing list without paying to join the association; this can be a good way to keep on top of latest developments in the subject.
8. Identify key challenges in teaching the subject Ask colleagues whoโve taught the subject before to help you understand where the common pitfalls are. Which areas do they find especially hard to teach? Which parts of the curriculum do students struggle with? Also, as someone who is new to the subject, you are likely to be able to identify areas which are appear trickier to grasp than others โ use this experience to put yourself into the shoes of your learners and think about how best to gain a better understanding of difficult areas together.
9. Model learning When we are new to a subject we have a unique chance to actively role model learning to our students. Itโs okay for them to know that you are new to the subject too โ use the fact that youโre learning together to generate discussion about how best to approach the learning and actively share the parts youโve found harder to master and explore how youโve overcome these challenges. Seeing your teacher as a learner too can be quiet inspiring as a student and can motivate them to learn.
10. Work a few weeks ahead It can be hard to get ahead on planning, but where possible itโs really helpful to work a few weeks ahead of your students as the topics covered in a few weeksโ time may add to what youโre currently covering, or may form a natural topic of more advanced questions from able students.
11. Encourage students to lead the learning Taking on the role of teacher is a fantastic way for students to develop and embed learning so do not feel that you have to lead every pat of every lesson. Instead, encourage students to take the lead and have them teach different topics back to the class. Taking on the role of expert can provide a real confidence boost and having to understand a subject well enough to teach our peers is a great way to ensure that the appropriate learning is in place.
12. Attend a course! Of course, one of the quickest and easiest ways to get up to speed when teaching a new subject for the first time is to attend relevant CPD. Creative Education have a wide range of courses aimed at non-specialist teachers which can give you a real confidence and knowledge boost in those early days.
Our non-specialist courses are suitable for KS3 and 4 teachers looking to successfully apply their teaching experience to deliver lessons in unfamiliar subjects.
They are available in a range of subjects and cover key curriculum topics, popular lesson activities, common problem areas and how to interpret and use existing lesson plans.
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has registered over 1,900,000 candidates for the 2020 Unified Tertiary Matriculations Examination, as the registration for the examination closes by midnight on Monday (today).
JAMB said on Sunday that the 1.9million was the highest number of registration done in the history of the board and would still increase as more candidates were expected to register on Monday.
The PUNCH reports that the UTME examination has been slated between March 14 and April 4 with an optional mock examination scheduled nationwide for Tuesday, February 18.
The boardโs Head of Press and Public Relations, Dr Fabian Benjamin, confirmed the 1.9million registered candidates in an interview, noting that it was the highest registration in the history of the board.
He said, โThe registration closes on Monday night. As I speak to you, we have registered over 1.9million. That is the highest we have ever had in the 41-year history of the board. Right now, we have surpassed the last yearโs statistics at 1.8million. That is to tell you that nobody has an excuse of why he or she could not register.
โOn the February 18 Mock, we have put everything in place. Our workers who are deployed for the exercise are already on the field. And as you are aware, the essence of the mock is to test the readiness of our facilities and also give the candidates the opportunity to have a hands-on experience on the computers.โ
Our correspondent, who monitored the UTME registration in three Computer-Based Test Centres in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, reports that there is already a last-minute rush at the centres.
The candidates thronged the centres at Jabi, Central Business District and Kubwa in their hundreds trying to beat the Monday deadline.
At the Global Distance Learning Institute, Central Business District, the centre Manager, Mr Emeka Nwanaka, confirmed the last-minute rush, adding that there were, however, no issues of biometric failure.
Earlier: JAMB Registers 1,434,632 Candidates So Far, Insists on 17th February Deadline
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has disclosed that a total of 1,434,632 candidates have so far registered for its ongoing 2020 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME and Direct Entry. The board also said the closing date for the registration remained February 17 and charged prospective candidates not yet registered to take advantage of the remaining days to do so.
JAMB, also warned Computer-Based Test, CBT, centres against turning away candidates who obtained ePINS elsewhere.
According to JAMB, this warning became necessary following a series of complaints received by the board that some centres are turning away candidates simply because they did not obtain their ePins from such centres.โ
The board called on all accredited CBT centres to comply with the rules of engagement in order not to attract any sanction.
Earlier: JAMB Registers 700,000 Candidates in 2 weeks
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has disclosed that about 700,000 candidates have so far been registered for the 2020 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) nationwide in two weeks.

Earlier: JAMB Registration Statistics for 2019: Over 1.6 Million Candidates For 2019 UTME
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB has disclosed that it has so far registered over 1.6 million candidates between Jan. 10 and Feb. 15 for the 2019 UTME and says not less than 1.8 million candidates would be registered for the examination by the end of the registration exercise scheduled for Feb. 21, 2019.
This was disclosed by the Boardโs Head, Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin in an interview with newsmen.
He said the ongoing registration so far has been satisfactory as it has recorded little or no hitches. It was gathered that Lagos State recorded the highest number of registered candidates 234,259 candidates.
An official bulletin of the board tagged โjambulletinโ issued on Sunday revealed that preparations for the successful conduct of the examination scheduled to commence few weeks from now is in top gear.
EARLIER FROM JAMB 2018: The following JAMB 2018 UTME statistical reports on registration and applications were released in the 2018 JAMB Admission Policy Meeting where the presentation was made by the Registrar.
JAMB Registration Statistics 2018: 1.6 Million JAMB UTME Forms Were Sold for 2018 UTME
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has just recently disclosed that about 1.6 million registration forms have been sold for the 2018 UTME.
The boardโs Head, Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday in Lagos.
He mentioned that this yearโs registration for the examination has proven to be one of the best in recent times.
He stressed that the board is seriously considering reducing the subsequent registration periods to about one month.
He however, warned that there will not be any more extensions in future registrations as some mischievous elements usually take advantage of that to undermine the integrity of the exam.

Former President Hosni Mubarak, who ruled Egypt for 30 years, died on Tuesday at the age of 91 after undergoing treatment in intensive care following surgery.
The former air force officer will be buried in a military funeral but the timing was still unclear, a military source told Reuters.
Mubarakโs son Alaa said in a Twitter post that included images of his late father that he had died on Tuesday morning.
Mubarak was ousted following mass protests in 2011. He was arrested two months later and spent several years in prison and military hospitals.
He was sentenced to life in prison for conspiring to murder 239 demonstrators during the 18-day revolt, but was freed in 2017 after being cleared of the charges.
He was however convicted in 2015 along with his two sons of diverting public funds and using the money to upgrade family properties. They were sentenced to three years in jail.
In an early reaction, the United Arab Emiratesโ minister of state for foreign affairs, Anwar Gargash, said the Arab world had lost a statesman who took significant national and historic positions.
Mubarak did not leave the country after his overthrow, unlike Tunisiaโs Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali, who fled with his family to Saudi Arabia after being ousted in protests that triggered the โArab springโ revolts that spread to Egypt and elsewhere in the region.
In contrast, the Mubarak family has stayed in Egypt since 2011 but kept a low profile.
Many Egyptians who lived through Mubarakโs time in power view it as a period of autocracy and crony capitalism. His overthrow led to Egyptโs first free election, which brought in Islamist President Mohamed Mursi.
Mursi lasted only a year in office after mass protests in 2013 led to his overthrow by then defence chief General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who is now president.
Mubarak-era figures, meanwhile, are gradually being cleared of charges, and laws limiting political freedoms have raised fears among activists that the old regime is back.
Mubarak had long maintained his innocence and said history would judge him a patriot who served his country selflessly.
2023: Delta govt cautions against distraction in governance
Delta Government has urged political appointees and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) officials to eschew acts capable of distracting governance in the state.
Specifically, the government cautioned politicians to be mindful of their attitudes in consultations and issues relating to 2023 general elections.
A statement by the Senior Political Adviser to the Governor, Chief Funkekeme Solomon, on Monday in Asaba, stated that such actions of the politicians were not just premature, but capable of undermining the administration’s resolve of bequeathing a Stronger Delta to the people.
It said that Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa was not averse to anyone pursuing an ambition but insisted that such persons must stop dropping his name in the process.
The government cautioned that all who engaged in political consultations must ensure that their conducts did not interfere with their official responsibilities in a manner that could weaken governance.
It announced that the Office of the Senior Political Adviser had been mandated to monitor the activities of all officials in the administration to ensure compliance with the directive.
The statement reads:”It has come to the notice of the Governor that some officials of our party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and in particular, some members in position of responsibility in this administration, have begun consultations on their political ambitions, especially for 2023 general elections.
“Reports indicate that some of these persons have even resorted to dropping the name of the Governor in these consultations thereby portraying him as teleguiding the emerging processes.
‘This is quite unfortunate as the actions of these persons could cause stampede and needless tension in the political space.
“While His Excellency, the Governor, is not averse to anyone pursuing an ambition, it becomes out of place when such actions are commencing barely nine (9) months into the second term of his administration.
“Such premature politicking is capable of undermining the unity of purpose of this administration and distracting it from the set vision of bequeathing a Stronger Delta to the people of Delta State.
“In view of the foregoing, the Governor has directed that members of Government, who are engaged in these actions under reference, should exercise caution.
“They should ensure that their conduct does not interfere with their official responsibilities in a manner that can weaken governance.
“Consequently, I am to state that appropriate sanctions await anyone whose aspirations become obstructive of or distractive to Government.
“In this connection, the Office of the Senior Political Adviser to the Governor has been mandated to monitor the activities of all officials of the present administration to ensure compliance with the Governor’s directive.”
A socio-cultural organisation of the Fulani ethnic group, Miyetti Allah, Kautel Horeh, has said that If Nigeria Breaks up Today, It wonโt affect them.
Speaking through its National President, Abdullahi Bodejo, in an interview with the Sun, He that said he is so afraid the way regions are coming up with illegal security outfits, โOne group calls its own, Amotekun; another group calls its own Shege ka fasaโ, declaring that he does not support anything illegal.
โif the Fulani should set up its own, how many countries will that be; how many countries do they not have brothers- Our brothers are in Cameroun, Niger, Chad, Mali etc. Some migrated to Ghana to rear their cows and other parts of the world.โ
He said his organization is looking at the response of the government and security agencies to the formation of these โillegal security outfitsโ, because if it comes to our side. I donโt think it is something that anybody can control.โ
โIf we are pushed to set up our own security outfit, nobody can control it because nobody knows how many Fulani in Nigeria; we are more than every tribe in this country, we are in every corner,โ Bodejo warned.
โIf anything happens to this country whether break up, nothing can affect the Fulani. Nothing can affect the Fulani,โ he added.
He said, however, that Fulani is blessed people who are managing themselves, but are hated by Nigerians โwho do not want to take their eyes off them.โ
