PROCEDURES ON HOW TO PAY UNICAL SCHOOL FEES FOR FRESH AND RETURNING STUDENTS

STEP 1: Both fresh and returning students are to log on to the portal using their JAMB Registration Number (Freshers) or Matric Number (Returning students)

STEP 2: You are to generate your bill and print afterwards

STEP 3: Check for the list of Banks and select the bank assigned to your course

STEP 4: Visit the bank closest to you and complete payment via e-Transact Platform

STEP 5: Collect bank payment slip which contain payment details and confirmation order number

STEP 6: Re-login to your portal to log on with your Registration Number or Matric Number and type in your BILL NUMBER (located on your bill) on the next page to enable you gain access to the portal

With the above steps, you can easily pay your tuition fee without the help of a third party. Remember you are not to give cash to any so called agent or lecturer to assist in paying your school fees. All fee payments are to be carried out via UNICAL’s portal.

HISTORY OF NIGERIA REVIEW

Although the years since Nigeria’s return to civilian rule in 1999 have seen an increased interest in its history and politics, Nigeria remains one of the most under-researched African countries today, especially in relation to its size and its cultural, political and economic importance. Toyin Falola and Matthew M. Heaton address this predicament with an immensely readable and up-to-date introduction to Nigerian history. Providing a chronology, the CVs of notable Nigerians and a good number of contemporary images, their book makes it easy for readers to engage with Nigerian history in a number of different ways. Selected bibliographies for each chapter include excellent references to a large number of African authors and invite the reader to explore the book’s main themes further, as well as emphasizing that the book was not produced in an ideological space limited by European and North American approaches to the study of Africa. The authors’ concern with the African experience also shapes the book’s first two chapters, which offer a discussion of states and societies in the region from 9,000 BCE to the early nineteenth century. Chapter 1 engages with the continuing influence of European and Egypt-centred interpretations of African history in scholarly debate, and while it acknowledges and validates the links of many early societies in what is now Nigeria with other parts of the world, it also emphasizes the importance of local developments. In the second chapter, the authors explore the importance of slavery and the slave trade for pre-colonial states and societies, and explain how local systems of slavery differed from those in the New World and especially America. In this way they address the focus on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries offered in most comparable publications and introduce the reader to important debates about African history. After these introductory chapters, the book refers more directly to debates on Nigeria. The third chapter emphasizes the success of the Sokoto caliphate after 1804 before the eventual establishment of British rule from the mid-nineteenth century onwards, discussed in Chapter 4. The authors suggest that while the expansion of Islamic government created great instability in the south, it also led to a pre-colonial consolidation of much of Nigeria’s present territory under African leadership. But Falola and Heaton are not nostalgic about any form of empire or its elites, and they treat the success of the caliphate in the same way they discuss the greater and more enduring success of the British, by emphasizing the alien and transformation nature of government produced on the basis of military victory and administrative integration. As a result, the authors are not only able to offer a balanced assessment of both African and European strategies of expansion in the age of imperialism, but also provide an insight into the agency of local groups in the contradictory struggles preceding the creation of the colonial state. Chapters 5 and 6 concentrate on colonial Nigeria, and the authors divide this period by the nature of African engagement with the state. They suggest that the early decades of colonial rule were characterized by localized responses to administrative and economic innovation, and that the 1929 Women’s War in south-east Nigeria represented the beginning of strategies of protest and engagement beyond the boundaries of local communities. Their emphasis on the nature of Nigerian society allows the authors to foreground the social changes associated with colonial rule, such as the ossification and stratification of existing hierarchies through Indirect Rule, on the one hand, and the dramatic social transformation associated with urbanization and shifting gender roles on the other. In reflection of such contradictions, the 1930s saw the beginning of political activity that would lead eventually to the independence of Nigeria, but they also witnessed the rise of class differences, compounded by ethnic and regional chauvinism. As a result, Nigeria was both economically dependent and politically divided when it emerged from Britsh rule in 1960. Chapter 7 explores the political instability and the civil war which marred the first decade of Nigeria’s independence and led to the emergence of the Nigerian military as the country’s main political force. NIMC: NIN IS FREE

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) says it has over 700,000 National e-ID cards yet to be collected by Nigerians from its offices nationwide.

National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has warned Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) candidates for 2020 to be wary of fraudsters while obtaining their National Identity Number (NIN).

The commission, which gave the warning in Abuja, stressed that candidates are not supposed to pay any fee to obtain the NIN.

The Federal Government, through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has made the NIN compulsory for all candidates planning to write next year’s UTME.

The commission said no worker should ask for money to register the UTME candidates as the registration and issuance of the NIN and ID cards are free.

The commission’s General Manager for Information Technology and Identity Database, Mr Chuks Onyepunuka, gave the warning at a symposium organized by the Computer-Based Test Centres Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria for examination bodies in the country.

Onyepunuka, who addressed reporters, explained that the introduction of the NIN for the 2020 UTME would help the JAMB to tackle double registration and biometric failures.

The manager said the NIN would help the board to also checkmate infractions.

He said: “It is not only JAMB that we are collaborating with; we are partnering with the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) for the renewal and issuance of passports. So, for JAMB, they are focusing on the examination. They recognize that NIMC has the strength to manage the identity of the candidates. They don’t want to bother themselves in the areas they do not have strength.”

“Their strength is to organize the examination. With the NIN, you cannot beat the system. Candidates cannot change the biometrics.”

JAMB Warns Candidates Against Accepting Admission Outside CAPS

Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has warned candidates against accepting any admission that does not pass through its Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) as any offer of admission not validated on JAMB’S profile page or offered through the CAPS is invalid.

According to JAMB, there have been complaints from the general public that three Public Universities have devised a method of “offering admission” to candidates outside the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) on their own designated portals.

JAMB Warns Candidates Against Accepting Admission Outside CAPS

JAMB described this as a deliberate act done with the intent to lure unsuspecting candidates to accept other programme (courses) aside from their programmes (courses) of choice.

The board re-emphasized that the CAPS system is designed among other things to:

i. prevent institutions from unilaterally changing or proposing a candidate for admission into other programmes (courses) other than his/her chosen one;

ii. disallow an institution to skip a higher ranking candidate to pick a less ranking candidate;

iii. allow an institution to recommend a substitute programme for the consent or rejection by a relatively low-ranking candidate who is not likely to secure a place in his/her initial programme.

iv. allow a low-ranking candidate on each programme to, on his or her own, opt-out of consideration from the initial programme and be considered for a programme where he/she ranks high enough to be considered.

It, therefore, warned that any candidate who accepts such offer of admission does so at his or her own risk as there will be no regularisation of any irregular or illegal admission.

The board added that appropriate caution has been given to these universities which are to promptly withdraw and desist from such illegitimate action and any of such act will henceforth be visited with appropriate sanctions.

House of Reps. Asks JAMB To Suspend NIN Requirement for UTME Registration

The House of Representatives has called on the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to suspend the policy of National Identification Number (NIN) as a requirement for candidates intending to register for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)

This followed a motion presented by Zainab Gimba (APC, Borno) who called on JAMB to review the policy on the use of NIN for prospective applicants until 2021.

According to her, it was necessary for JAMB to review the timeline pending the establishment of more enrollment centres by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) across the country.

She further stated that although many Nigerians turned out to be captured by NIMC, most have not been able to do so due to infrastructural challenges like poor network, power failure, no power supply and sometimes inadequate manpower or equipment to attend to them. she mentioned that an official of NIMC recently disclosed that less than 20 percent of Nigerians are captured in their database.

The lawmaker urged the board to extend the use of the national ID “in order to allow more time and better awareness for prospective candidates as many prospective candidates from remote locations in the country may not be able to register for the UTME due to non-registration with the NIMC.

She suggested that JAMB should collaborate more with NIMC, states and local governments for efficient registration of its prospective candidates.
