HOW TO MAKE NIGERIA A BETTER PLACE

Some recommendations way are outlined here from the analysis of the various opinions in these topics.

DISCIPLINE

Late Professor Chinua Achebe had earlier asserted that the problem Nigeria suffers from is fundamentally the failure of leadership. He argued that the failure of leadership lay at the root of Nigeriaโ€™s problems. Another problem Nigeria suffers from however, is indiscipline. Nigeria is where she is today due to insincere leadership, corruption but most of all, Indiscipline. It is indiscipline that will prompt a police officer to receive bribe that will jeopardize national security as well as hamper the trust the people they swear to protect have on them. It is indiscipline that will make school teachers, lecturers to collect money in order to pass an unserious student. It is also indiscipline that will drive a decorated army officer to sell out his nation for a price. Indiscipline is the chief of all misconfigure of our national problem.

Discipline in the action and behavior of individuals and groups in the private and public sector will inadvertently root out bribery and corruption, bad leadership and several other problems facing our country Nigeria.

 PERFUSE IN NOVEL INTELLIGENT

The rural areas in Nigeria accounts for a large percentage of the Nigerian population, however; some of these areas lack some essential social services and social amenities. One of such social services is fundamental basic education. This problem was addressed by the government through the creation of Government Schools around the country, burin most of these schools, the standards of teaching and learning are extremely poor. However, individuals and non – governmental organizations are at the forefront of the investment on innovative literacy. The Center of Development Support Initiative (CEDSI), a registered charity geared towards promoting good governance and sustainable development in rural communities has, over the past ten years, carried out development initiatives in over 500 communities. One of the unique efforts of CEDSI is the library ports literacy group. Each resource center is a one – stop center where young people can learn life – long skills. The centers have a music academy, library and bookshop. Young people are encouraged to develop skills in reading, writing and spelling as well as debate on civic issues. Investing in ideas such as these can help to radically stamp out illiteracy particularly in rural Nigeria, hence equipping the nation with the human resources for sustainable development.

ADVOCATING FOR JUSTICE AND EQUALITY

The Unity and Positive Change in a New Nigeria (UPCINN) is founded by lawyer Abby Ojo, it is dedicated to portraying Nigeria in a new light, promoting Nigerian culture and highlighting tourist attractions and showcasing new and ongoing development in the different states in the country. UPCINN believes that every citizen of a nation must contribute to the positive change of the country and be passionate about the good of the country, not just leave all the work to their government. In April, UPCINN worked with other well meaning organizations to organize a worldwide demonstration and campaign to recognize the constitutional (human) rights of the disabled and autistic people in Nigeria. Nigerians both at home and abroad are tired of the status quo and they are united in demanding more from Nigerian leaders through their democratic and constitutional rights as citizens.

AVOIDANCE OF BRIBERY AND CORRUPT PRACTICES

Bribery is something that has permeated the facet of the Nigerian social system. Most Nigerians have participated in facilitating it either directly or indirectly. Bribery is now a common phenomenon in the daily life of some Nigerians that it no longer seems evil. However, this problem needs to be stopped by a conscious mental and physical effort on the part of Nigerians, and not only those in positions of power and authority. Effective policies should be put in place to regulate the conduct of officers in the public sector to checkmate their activities in order ensure adequate service delivery in the public sector.

ย INVESTMENT IN ALTERNATE ECONOMIC SECTORS

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Ever since the oil booms of the 1970โ€™s, the focus of the national economy gradually shifted from agriculture into crude oil. The effect of this shift of economic priorities was a monopolization of the Nigerian economy by the oil sector and the neglect of other highly profitable sectors of the Nigerian economy. The agricultural sector, the tourism sector, the mining sector, the art and craft sector and many other sectors of the Nigerian economy have greatly suffered due to this neglect. However, if the administration focuses more attention into these sectors and properly invest in them, Nigeria could double its GDP and increase its export to other nations, therefore greatly participating in the global economy and increasing in human capital index, standard of living and other measures for globally assessing the overall standard of a nation. In conclusion, there are several other ways not mentioned here, of making Nigeria a better place; the reason for that is due to the fact that opinions vary regarding the ways and manners in which Nigeria could be made a better place. However, if the steps listed above are thoroughly implemented, Nigeria will witness a radical transformation in its political, economic and social institutions. As such, it will function better in harmony and equilibrium.

CYBER SECURITY JOB DESCRIPTION: WHAT TO EXPECT WORKING IN THE FIELD

woman working in computer server room

The term โ€œcyber securityโ€ makes you think of an action movie where a team of tech-savvy pros embark on a mission to save the day from behind their computer screens. The real work of cyber security pros might not be quite that exciting, but it is still an incredibly important job in the digital age.

So whatโ€™s the real cyber security job description? โ€œCyber security professionals ensure the confidentiality, integrity and availability of all data across the organization,โ€ saysย Greg Scott, cyber security professional and author.

Thereโ€™s more to working in cyber security than meets the eye. Weโ€™re diving deep into the cyber security job description so you can determine whether you might have a future in this essential tech career.

The importance of cyber security

Cyber security is all about protecting dataโ€”but why is data such a big deal? โ€œEvery organization needs data to operate,โ€ Scott says. Data is the foundation of business in the digital age. It includes everything from important financial information to personal medical histories to the type of cat food customers buy.

โ€œSecurity is as strong as the weakest link,โ€ says Jamie Cambell, cyber security expert and founder of consumer digital privacy websiteย GoBestVPN. โ€œIf a billion-dollar company didnโ€™t have proper security measures, it simply could not operate. There are too many hacking attacks.โ€

Cyber security professionals are the technology experts who keep hackers at bay, ideally by preventing attacks from happening in the first place. โ€œThe primary role of a cybersecurity professional is more proactive than reactive,โ€ Cambell says. Data is growing more important as organizations across industries rely on cyber security experts to keep their data safe and secure.

Cyber security job duties

Cyber security experts juggle a variety of daily job duties to accomplish their mission of protecting data. Their most common job duties include โ€œdesigning and implementing security measuresโ€”taking into account a companyโ€™s security risksโ€”and installing, properly configuring and regularly updating security software,โ€ says Dmitry Kurskov, director of information security atย ScienceSoft. He adds that cyber security specialists are also responsible for creating a plan of action in case security breaches do occur.

These tech professionals must research new technology and stay up to date on cyber security trends, according to theย Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).1ย Cyber security specialists also actively monitor the safety of their organizationโ€™s information and conduct tests to find any weaknesses in their systems.

Working in cyber security doesnโ€™t always mean youโ€™ll be behind a screen, however. โ€œSome cybersecurity professionals lean on the social sideโ€”they are less โ€˜technicalโ€™ and focus more on securing things on a human level,โ€ Cambell says. This aspect of the job includes updating employees on security protocols, working to prevent a type of attack called โ€œsocial engineeringโ€โ€”attacks that rely more on human error than technical know-howโ€”and collaborating with company executives to create a security plan.

Cyber security work environment

Careers in cyber security can be found in nearly every industry, thanks to organizationsโ€™ widespread use of data. Although 28 percent of information security analysts work in the computer systems industry, others can be found working in finance and insurance, company management or administrative and support services, according to theย BLS.1

Most cyber security workdays follow the typical 9 to 5 pattern youโ€™ll find in many careers. That said, cyber criminals donโ€™t exactly clock out after business hours. This means many of these tech pros may also need to be on call on nights or weekends in case of an after-hours security breach.

Cyber security skills

You might be surprised to learn that finding success in a cyber security career isnโ€™t all about technical ability. โ€œItโ€™s not enough for a cybersecurity professional to be technically skilled,โ€ Kurskov says.

Transferable skills, like communication and decision-making, are equally important. Being able to think on your feet and show good judgment are especially valuable in this field. โ€œSecurity pros should always be ready to react to cyber-related incidents quickly, make hardโ€”and preferably correctโ€”decisions taking into consideration all security risks and potential consequences these decisions may cause,โ€ Kurskov says.

Donโ€™t underestimate the skills and experience you already have that could be beneficial in cyber security! We analyzed nearly 138,000 cyber security job postings to bring you the top skills real employers are looking for.

WHY STUDY CYBER SECURITY? 8 REASONS TO REMEMBER

illustration of rubiks cube with tech design

It really does seem like cyber security is impossible to ignore these days. Andย cyber security experts insistย that it will be more and more dangerous for companies to ignore growing digital threats. If youโ€™ve looked into cyber security before, you know how critical this role is becoming in todayโ€™s society.

But critical doesnโ€™t necessarily mean itโ€™s a good career choice. You want to get a wide-angle view of working in cyber security to see whether an investment in pursuing this career path appeals to you.

Youโ€™ve come to the right placeโ€”we asked professionals in the cyber security field to weigh in on why they chose this career and what it could offer to career hopefuls in the future.

So, why study cyber security?

โ€œIโ€™ve been in cybersecurity since, well, the beginning of cybersecurity,โ€ says George Kamis, CTO ofย Forcepoint. โ€œAnd what I really like about this field is that itโ€™s continuously changing. It seems like every day thereโ€™s another news headline about a cyberattack.โ€

While some like Kamis may love the challenge of securing networks from continually shifting threats and attack approaches, thatโ€™s not all there is to like. Read on to learn what else Kamis and others had to share.

1. Our network connectivity is only growing

The learning curve for organizations adapting to the digital world is steep even now. And it doesnโ€™t show any sign of tapering off. โ€œThe world is only becoming more networked,โ€ says Allan Buxton, director of forensics atย Secure Forensics.

Buxton explains that even cyber security professionals are constantly learning to keep up with the speed of attacks and change. For instance, Buxton points to the computing systems in newer vehicles needing cyber security reviewโ€”something that would barely register as an area of concern 20 years ago.

โ€œNew fields of discipline will emergeโ€”itโ€™s not a field where you can get your degree, go to work, and never have to take a class again,โ€ Buxton says.

More and more household objects are becoming part of theย Internet of Thingsย (IoT) and with each comes new challenges to counter and best practices to absorbโ€”and with that can come opportunities.

โ€œThere will always be attackers looking to take advantage of insecure implementations, so thereโ€™s a job out there for you if you commit to the profession.โ€

2. Job opportunities are projected to grow substantially

Speaking of opportunities, these careers are on the rise with theย Bureau of Labor Statisticsย projecting a 28 percent growth in employment of information security analysts through 2026โ€”a rate much faster than the national average.1ย One of the primary drivers of this growth is the increasing prevalence of cyberattacks.

Great demand doesnโ€™t always equal opportunity where you are, however. IT and cyber governance expert Elvis Moreland points out that even though the job market in general is good for this field, every metropolitan area will be a little different. Sites likeย Cyber Seekย can give you more information on what the cybersecurity needs are in the areas you are considering.

3. Specialties within cyber security are increasing

For a long while, IT departments basically had cyber security duties looped into their work. While it remains closely tied with IT, cyber security is now an established field all to itselfโ€”and a variety of roles and needs are developing all the time.

โ€œI enjoy the emerging professionalism of the field,โ€ Moreland says. โ€œSimilar to industries like healthcare, we have specialties in governance, engineering, assessment, risk management, compliance, architecture, operations, eDiscovery, forensics, etc. โ€ฆโ€

These specialties just create more options for professionals in the field to truly spend time working on what they like best and developing a deep skill set in specific areas.

4. This job can be hard to outsource

When it comes to securing assets and warding off breaches that could bring down a companyโ€”few organizations are willing to roll the dice with outsourcing. While obviously thereโ€™s no guarantee this will remain true forever, Buxton says the work of information security professionals, particularly when well-established in larger organizations, is relatively tricky to outsource.

This makes many in-house cyber security professionals well-positioned for job security. This should also give information security professionals working for managed service providers (specialized cybersecurity businesses with multiple clients) some peace of mind as wellโ€”itโ€™s relatively โ€œstickyโ€ work and clients arenโ€™t likely to hop from provider to provider frequently.

5. You get to be a hero sometimes

โ€œIโ€™m in this career because, honestly, I found it more interesting than design or administration,โ€ Buxton says. โ€œIt can be rewarding work, especially when you stop someone from suffering harm, or track down an attacker for real-world consequences.โ€

Working in information technology is in a way similar to working as a refereeโ€”most donโ€™t notice you when youโ€™re doing a good job as things are just working the way they should. While cyber security work still largely follows this mold, there are certainly times where the nature of your work can add some excitement (and recognition) for your day-to-day efforts. Even when a job well-done flies under the radar, you know that your work directly impacts peopleโ€™s security and thwarts criminal endeavors.

6. You have multiple viable educational paths

Since cyber security is still pretty new, the industry isnโ€™t weighed down by expectations of how the education path should look. While aย Cyber Security Bachelorโ€™s degreeย is definitely a strong option, Moreland says thereโ€™s still a path into the field for those withย associateโ€™s degrees in ITโ€”particularly those that focus on security, networking, systems management or even programming.

โ€œThe key to being a successful security professional in and around IT arenas is to build a foundation in IT and the fundamentals of security,โ€ Moreland explains. โ€œThat is also why I recommend obtaining theย CompTIA Network+ยฎ,ย ย Security+ยฎ, and theย (ISC)2ย SSCPยฎ certifications as part of a comprehensive package.โ€

If you combine education, experience and up-to-dateย cyber security certifications, Moreland says your resume starts getting pretty unbeatable.

7. Itโ€™s a career of consistent change

โ€œWhat I love most is that things consistently change,โ€ Buxton says. โ€œAlthough the fundamentals lastโ€”the nuances and details change almost daily.โ€ Buxton says exploits are patched, zero days are discovered, and insiders find new ways to steal data on a regular basis.

โ€œIn my field, OEMs and software publishers find new ways to prevent acquisition or review of user data, even though they track and retain more user activity now than ever before,โ€ Buxton explains. โ€œIt’s a challenge that can only be met with a commitment to learning.โ€

This environment also favors people who know how to keep learning. Adam Bobrow, founder and CEO ofย Foresight Resilience Strategies, plans to recruit junior staff into cybersecurity analyst positions that mostly require critical thinking skills and communication over technical skills.

โ€œAt the same time, we will help junior employees to build their technical expertise and accumulate certifications,โ€ Bobrow says. โ€œThe goal is to prepare them for opportunities in cybersecurity without requiring them to start with technical skills that could be difficult to acquire in the classroom.โ€

8. You get to solve complex technical puzzles

โ€œI like figuring out how to break things and stop things from breaking, which I think was actually a perfect segue into cybersecurity,โ€ Kamis says. He explains that cyber security is like a puzzle where you have to consider how you could break into a system and how you could stop a system from being broken into all at once.

โ€œFrom the beginning I realized that I enjoyed solving that puzzle from both sides,โ€ Kamis says.

If youโ€™re the type to love getting to the bottom of logical and technical challenges to find satisfactory solutions, Kamis says cyber security can be an appealing career option.

Cyber security professionals are in demand

โ€œThere is no question that every organization will only grow more reliant on data and the systems that store, transmit, and analyze it over the coming decades,โ€ Bobrow says. He adds that the growing adoption of IoT technologies will push the amount of data to be analyzed, manipulated and protected to grow at unprecedented rates.

โ€œCybersecurity will be a necessary expertise and the need for skilled technicians is likely to only increase making it a good long-term bet for a career.โ€

Organizations are starting to recognize that cyber security, privacy, and risk management are no longer topics discussed in the server room, Moreland says. โ€œNow they are business assurance mechanisms discussed and monitored in the boardroom.โ€

If all of these details add up to keep you interested, then working in cyber security might be a perfect career move for you. But what would you actually do, daily, as a cyber security professional? 8 SIGNS YOU SHOULD CONSIDER BEFORE BECOMING A SOFTWARE DEVELOPER

Becoming Software Developer

Today, high school students seem more likely to have learned coding than cursive.ย Several statesย have formally adopted policies to give students access to computer science coursesโ€”with some even extending these offerings to middle and elementary school students! This shouldnโ€™t come as surprise, though. Demand for tech-savvy professionals is clearly strong and doesnโ€™t appear to be losing steam any time soon. Nearly every company relies on computer programs, applications or other underlying systems in some way. In fact, employment of software developers is projected to increase by 21 percent through 2028โ€”more than four times the national average, according to theย U.S. Bureau of Labor Statisticsย (BLS).1

You know the employment opportunities are out there. But how do you know if you have what it takes for becoming a software developer? Weโ€™ve asked tech pros to identify some of the common characteristics found in successful developers. But before we get too far along, letโ€™s first flesh out the details of what you might find in a software developerโ€™s job description.

What does a software developer do?

Software developers are the creative forces behind the apps and programs you use dailyโ€”from your email to social media or even the underlying operating systems that allows all those programs to run.

Generally, software developers, focus on either application or system development.ย Software application developersย design and develop computer and mobile applications that perform specific functions whileย systems software developersย create the operating systems that support these other programs or app. Industries like the medical field, the military and the industrial goods sector often enlist systems software developers to design and build new operating systems.

No matter which path you end up taking, youโ€™ll utilize the same traitsโ€”like analytical thinking, creativity and problem-solving. But the list doesnโ€™t end there. We enlisted the experts to expand on some characteristics many successful software developers share.

You should consider becoming a software developer ifโ€ฆ

1. You like working with people

Contrary to popular belief, software developers donโ€™t spend all of their time holed up in a dark room while their eyes glaze over from prolonged screen staring. While there are certainly times when developers work alone to create their part of a project, there is a lot of time spent collaborating with others on the team, communicating about goals and strategies, and working with others to solve a problem.

โ€œIn my company, junior developers often fix senior developers’ code and that’s totally okay,โ€ says Mark Tinnelly, software developer atย CardioTech. โ€œNobody knows everything, and we work together to share and learn from each other.โ€ Both giving and receiving critique is a key component to making sure the technology youโ€™re developing meets the userโ€™s needs.

In addition to working with other software developers, youโ€™ll be collaborating with stakeholders and clients to make sure their goals are met and theyโ€™re kept up to date with the progress of the project. โ€œNot only is collaboration is one of the most under-looked responsibilities of a software developer, but in many software positions identifying requirements from stakeholders or clients is half of the job,โ€ says Colin Ma, current lead strategistย Study Prep Loungeย and former technology consultant.

Though software development projects can take a long time, effective collaboration can make them run smoother and make reaching the end goal even more rewarding.

2. You have a knack for problem solving

A big part of coding is creating technology that solves a userโ€™s problem. Thereโ€™s also a lot of problem solving involved in the nitty gritty of the actual work in software development. You likely have a knack for problem solving if youโ€™re apt to see connections between pieces that are not obviously connected.

If you get a thrill from looking at an issue, trying to figure out which angle to approach it from, and you donโ€™t get discouraged along the way, software development might be a great career fit for you.

Every day, software developers solve problemsโ€”from writing code to making sure an application functions well in each architecture level. โ€œYou need to enjoy problem solving to enjoy what youโ€™ll be doing for 8 hours a day,โ€ advises Paul Kim, lead developer atย Maples Design.

3. Youโ€™re musically inclined

Scientists have continuouslyย drawn connectionsย between those who love music and those who have a talent for math. While this link is still up for debate, it is easy to see how reading musical notes is similar to coding. Like learning a new language, it takes skill and plenty of practice.

Musicians need both analytical skills and an intuitive nature to improvise musicโ€”which can also serve them well when designing a new software system or mobile app. Theyโ€™re predisposed to ask questions like โ€œhowโ€ and โ€œwhy,โ€ which can help them create a better product.

โ€œIf you like to play an instrument and read notes, you are already halfway there,โ€ says former software developer, Alessandro Marianantoni. Like reading or composing music, software development has a lot to do withย recognizing and manipulating patterns.

Youโ€™ll also notice similarities between musicians and software developers in the way they collaborate as well. โ€œItโ€™s like playing in a band,โ€ says Jerry Anderson, Software Engineer atย Renty.ae. โ€œTogether itโ€™s more complicated, but the result is far more powerful.โ€

4. You like to see order in things

Do you arrange the dishes in your cupboards just so? Do you like the feeling of a clean, tidy, structured room? Good news! Software development is all about order and ensuring applications take steps in an order that makes logical sense.

โ€œHaving a knack for organization gives you a head start in spotting potential ways to improve your code,โ€ notes Kim. Even if you donโ€™t feel like your organizational skills are top notch right now, you can develop stronger organizational tendencies as you go through your classes and school. It doesnโ€™t hurt to start developing routines and systems to help you get more organized in your daily life.

Whether your crayons were arranged in rainbow order as a child, or you get a little annoyed by your sisterโ€™s messy craft drawer, if you like organization, you might find success in software development.

5. Trying new things gives you a thrill

โ€œTechnology moves at an incredibly fast pace, and a software developer must stay on top of things and adapt to these changes,โ€ explains Tinnelly.

From changes in coding to company requirements, to the particulars features users want in their software, developers are constantly adapting and melding into new ways of doing things. Youโ€™ll need to stay on top of industry news, key metrics, and basics of project management and flow.

As a software developer, you canโ€™t wait around for someone else to take initiative and teach you what you need to know. โ€œGreat developers will find different resources or talk to the right people and find the solution no matter what,โ€ says Sanjay Patoliya ofย Teclogiq. This may mean doing research, seeking out mentors, courses or workshops to learn a new skill on your own. Chances are both the skill and the demonstration of your drive will go far.

6. You stay intrinsically motivated

Thereโ€™s no doubt about itโ€”coding can be tricky work. Not only are you continuously solving problems and adapting to new changes, but youโ€™re also memorizing code, remembering company protocol and backtracking to fix mistakes you made.

โ€œ[Itโ€™s having the] willpower to stay motivated even when the going gets tough,โ€ says Tinnelly. โ€œWhen you learn to code, there will be a point where you’ll feel discouraged because of all the mistakes you make. But you have to stay focusedโ€ฆitโ€™s a game of patience.โ€

Software development can be finickyโ€”portions of code that seemingly work perfectly on their own can go completely off the rails when interfacing with other code. Fixing these issues can take a fair amount of trial and error, so a natural sense of determination can be a big plus.

7. You enjoy puzzles and strategy

Were you the one who spent hours at the kitchen table mulling over that 10,000-piece puzzle? Coding is all about putting together the pieces of an enigmaโ€”creating a brand new program or solving problems from an old one. Writing new code often means writing, testing and then revising. There are often many moving pieces.

โ€œSometimes coding is about having a certain number of pieces and putting them in the right order,โ€ explains Marianantoni.

Like those giant, kitchen-table puzzles take persistence, so does software development. A single project can take weeks, months and even years. If you like coming up with strategic solutions and enjoy a long game, becoming a software developer could be a perfect fit for you.

8. You love Technology

It may seem like a no brainer, but loving technology is a must for software developers. This is a field with people consumed by new games, programs and gadgets. But this infatuation isnโ€™t just based on an appreciation for exciting new features or capabilitiesโ€”thereโ€™s also the thrill of figuring out how all this new stuff works! Software developers are natural tinkerers and like to find ways to implement the latest and greatest innovations to their repertoire.

Can you see yourself as a software developer?

Do you see any of those qualities in yourself? If so, you may be a natural fit for working in software development. Of course, it takes more than natural tendencies to make it as a software developerโ€”you’ll need formal training as well. To learn more about how Rasmussen College can help you get there, visit theย Software Application Development program page.

How to become a software developer

Choosing to become a software developer is the first step toward your new career, but you need to know what to do next. Weโ€™ve spoken to industry experts and rounded up the latest data so youโ€™ll know exactly how to start your journey toward landing a job in software development.

Have a passion for coding

โ€œAspiring developers need to love learning and have a passion for coding,โ€ says Mark Runyon, senior consultant for Innovative Architects. Software developing requires you to spend much of your day working with code or thinking about creative ways to solve problems with code. Youโ€™ll enjoy your work more and stand out from others in the field if you have a passion for coding that drives you to excel.

โ€œTechnology is constantly evolving,โ€ Runyon adds. โ€œYou have to want to explore the new technologies and discover new ways of doing things to be successful as a software engineer.โ€ In the fast-paced tech industry, a true love of coding will give you motivation to keep your skills up to date.

Brush up on your tech skills

Speaking of skills, software developers need to enter the workforce with a solid set of tools at their disposal if they want to stand out to employers. โ€œPick a stack (a set of technologies and tools used to create and run software) and get really good at it,โ€ advises Scott McGillivray, chief technology officer for Pop-Art.

The exact coding skills and languages youโ€™ll need will vary depending on the workplace, but it helps to know what languages are most commonly sought after from employers. We used real-time job analysis software to identify the top five technical skills employers are looking for in their software developers:2

  • Javaโ„ข
  • SQL
  • JavaScriptโ„ข
  • C#
  • Python

Be a star communicator

Technical skills are essential to a career as a software developer, but soft skills that allow you to work on a team and creatively solve problems can be just as important. โ€œI’m far more interested in the โ€˜unteachableโ€™ qualities, like initiative, curiosity, collaboration, communication style and cultural match,โ€ McGillivray says.

Austin Norby, software developer with Blue Star Software, says communication is a key trait for software developers.

โ€œDevelopers need to be able to communicate their understanding of their ideas, translate them into code and engage in a continuous feedback loop until the product is completed,โ€ Norby says.

Curious about what other soft skills youโ€™ll need? Our analysis shows these as the most in-demand soft skills for software developers:2

  • Communication
  • Collaboration
  • Problem solving
  • Troubleshooting
  • Research

Gain experience

Taking initiative to create relevant work samples and gain experience can be the difference between landing your dream job and heading back to the drawing board.

โ€œAs a guy who’s seen a lot of resumes, I can say that the ones that get my attention have links to actual, running samples of the developerโ€™s work,โ€ McGillivray says.

Just because you havenโ€™t been hired yet doesnโ€™t mean you canโ€™t build up a portfolio of your best coding work. Runyon suggests turning coding into an after-hours hobby thatโ€™s both fun and expands your skills. โ€œI usually have a few side projects that I work on for fun. It can be a new technology that I want to try out or putting together a cool piece of software to solve a personal need.โ€ In addition to improving your coding prowess, this practice can also show employers you have the committed, passionate mindset theyโ€™re looking for. Developers looking to gain additional experience should look into getting involved with open-source projectsโ€”theyโ€™re an excellent way to contribute to something tangible and learn along the way.

WHAT DOES A SOFTWARE DEVELOPER DO? AN OVERVIEW FOR 2018 AND BEYOND

male staring at computer

Youโ€™ve always had a penchant for solving puzzles and problemsโ€”especially when it comes to technology. Not only that, but friends and family come to you with all their tech troubles. And they count on you being the first one in line when a new gadget is released. You simply love the innovative and sophisticated world of tech.

You have a lot of the characteristics of a person who would make a great software developer: youโ€™re musically-inclined, you like working with people and you stay intrinsically motivated. This techy job seems like a great place for you to start, but youโ€™re probably wondering: What does a software developer do every day?

We connected with professional software developers across the country and gathered government data to help you answer this very question. If youโ€™re interested in a sneak peek of the career life of a software developer, then read on.

What is a software developer, exactly?

You know that smartphone app you rely on? That computer game that kept you transfixed for hours as a kid? That program that helps you budget and track expenditures? Software developers created all of them.

Software developers are the creative, brainstorming geniuses behind computer programs. While some software developers may focus on a specific program or app, others create giant networks or underlying systems that help trigger and power other programs. This is why there are two main classifications of developers: software applications developers and systems software developers.

What do software applications developers do?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), developers in this sector are responsible for designing computer or mobile applications.1 The nature of their work is largely focused on creating for consumers. This involves understanding user needs, developing software solutions, monitoring performance and modifying programs as needed.

What do systems software developers do?

These professionals are focused on operating systems-level software, compilers and network distribution software, as outlined by the DOL.1 This role is more geared toward designing solutions for enterprise organizations. This includes developing software for medical, industrial, military, communications, aerospace, business, scientific and general computing applications.

What are some common software developer job duties?

Much of the actual creation of software programs happens through the writing of code, and software developers oversee that. Depending on the company where they work, a software developer will analyze the needs of the user and then create, test and develop software that will solve a problem, provide entertainment or simply make life easier for that target market.

After mapping out the design, creating flowcharts and drafting out each step of the process, developers will build diagrams and models to instruct programmers how to write the code for the program.

Other job duties include mapping out the software to have on record for future upgrades and enhancements, testing the software, and collaborating with other computer specialists to make sure the software is top notch and functioning properly.

What skills does a software developer need?

Not only are software developers in charge of outlining and creating the code and design for a program, but these types of careers generally involve a lot of collaboration between various stakeholders. Itโ€™s important for a software developer to have a combination of technical know-how and excellent interpersonal skills.

1. Problem-solving

The whole point of developing software is to create programs that solve the userโ€™s problem. If youโ€™re the type who tends to identify issues and figure out the best way to approach a solution, you may be a perfect fit for a software development career. Not only that, but programming alone is often an exercise in problem-solving and troubleshootingโ€”being able to patiently and strategically tackle potential bugs or issues in code is a big part of their work.

2. Teamwork

Contrary to whatโ€™s commonly assumed, software developers arenโ€™t secluded at their desk with no contact with the outside world. In reality, they spend a lot of time teaming up with other developers and programmers to create a prime product for the user. Great communication, empathy and a knack for collaborating with others is a must.

3. Analytical and strategic

Coding and software are enigmas of a sort, and if youโ€™re someone who likes solving a mystery by looking at the big picture as well as the smaller steps along the way, youโ€™ll be right at home developing software. Thereโ€™s a lot of thoughtful planning that goes into creating these types of programs. If you can figure out the fastest or most efficient path from point A to point B, the world of software development will welcome you with open arms.

4. Intrinsic motivation

Creating software can be tricky, tedious work, so itโ€™s important that you donโ€™t get bogged down or discouraged when you donโ€™t succeed the first time you try something. If youโ€™re the type of person who is naturally determined to finish everything you start, youโ€™ll be well-suited for a career in software development.

Where do software developers work?

Job opportunities for software developers are vast and varied. Software applications developers held just over 831,000 jobs in 2016, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).2 There were about 425,000 positions for systems software developers in that same year, equating more than 1.25 million opportunities for software developers.2

So where are these opportunities, exactly? The skills of software developers are needed in a variety of industries. The BLS lists the following as the most common fields for each type of software developer2:

Software applications developersSystems software developers
Computer systems design servicesComputer systems design services
Software publishersManufacturing
Finance and insuranceSoftware publishers
ManufacturingFinance and insurance
Management of companies and enterprisesEngineering services

As you can see, a variety of industries rely on the skills of software developers. There are also several options when it comes to the work environment, as well as the type of work a software developer may end up doing. Many work in a traditional office environment, but there is also opportunity to work in agency settings or to telecommute. This variety allows you to tailor your career to fit your personal preferences.

What is the average software developer salary?

In todayโ€™s digital economy, virtually everything is revolved around technology. This means qualified software developers are a hot commodity.

The BLS projects careers for software applications developers to grow 31 percent through 2026, which is more than four times the national average.2 This is largely due to the growing desire for businesses to produce new mobile device applications.

The outlook for systems software developers isnโ€™t quite as favorable, but it is still projected at the faster-than-average rate of 11 percent.2 Although this type of work isnโ€™t as prevalent, it does typically come with higher compensation.

The median annual salary for systems software developers in 2017 was $107,600, as reported by the BLS. 2 On the other hand, software applications developers came in at $101,790. 2 Considering the average for all occupations was $37,690, itโ€™s clear that a software developer salary, regardless of which route you choose, will come with exciting earning potential.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT BECOMING A WEB DEVELOPER

female developer reading code on a monitor

If youโ€™ve ever thought about becoming a web developer, you came to the right place! Pursuing a new career is a big decision, so itโ€™s important to do your research.

Perhaps youโ€™ve always dreamed of becoming a web developer. Or maybe the time youโ€™ve spent tinkering with the HTML & CSS code on your hobby blogโ€™s platform has sparked your inner curiosity about life as a professional web developer. No matter how you made it here, youโ€™ve got some questions and weโ€™ve got some answers!

We gathered a combination of expert insight, government information and real-time job analysis data to provide you with the answers to all of your burning questions. Below youโ€™ll find eight common questions about becoming a web developer.

What do web developers do?

Letโ€™s start with the basics. Youโ€™re probably well aware that web developers build websites, but thereโ€™s much more to it than that. Web developers must also analyze user needs to ensure the proper content, graphics and underlying structure are used to meet both the goals of the user and the websiteโ€™s owner, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).1

Common responsibilities include:1

  • Using authoring or scripting languages to build websites
  • Writing, designing and editing webpage content or directing others producing content
  • Identifying and correcting problems uncovered by testing or user feedback
  • Converting written, graphic, audio and video components to compatible web formats

What is the career outlook for web developers?

If learning what web developers do has you excited about the thought of becoming one, youโ€™ll be happy to hear that positions for these pros are growing. According to the BLS, web development jobs are projected to increase 15 percent through 2026.1 Thatโ€™s more than double the average projected growth rate for all occupations.

โ€œEveryone wants a website,โ€ says Brandon Swift, co-founder of Santa Barbara-basedย Volt Commerce. โ€œAs a web developer, youโ€™ll never be short on work.โ€

Websites have become a critical component for businesses to stay competitive. A company cannot simply utilize a generic online template if it wants to provide a custom, genuine experience for its consumers. This is part of why Swift believes the field should remain strong going forward.

Knowing thereโ€™s strong demand is great, but what about the career path for web developers? Most will start out in a junior web development role and eventually work their way up to a senior developer positionโ€”but from there it can get interesting. You may eventually manage a team of developers, or you might opt to hone in on a specialized area of web development. Experienced developers could also try their hand at freelancing or starting their own business.

What are some common jobs for web developers?

There are several job titles that fall under the umbrella of โ€œweb developer.โ€ A professional with these skills and knowledge is qualified to work in a number of positions related to web development and computer programming.

Curious about the most common web development jobs out there? We used job analysis software to examine more than 197,000 web developer jobs posted over the past year.2 The data helped us determine some common job titles for web developers.

Web development job titles2

  1. Front-end developer
  2. Back-end developer
  3. User experience (UX) designer
  4. User interface (UI) developer
  5. Software developer

How much do web developers make?

Itโ€™s promising to know that jobs are projected to increase, but youโ€™re probably also curious about what to expect from a typical web developer salary. If youโ€™re going to invest your time and money into pursuing a new career, you want to know itโ€™s going to be worth it in the long run.

Youโ€™ll be happy to hear that the BLS reports the 2018 median annual salary for web developers at $69,430.1 This is notably higher than the average for all occupations in 2018, which was $38,640.

Itโ€™s worth noting that web developer salaries can vary quite a bit depending on factors like industry, education or experience level, geographic location, and whether or not youโ€™re self-employed. In 2018, the lowest 10 percent earned less than $38,000 and the highest 10 percent earned more than $124,000 annually, according to the BLS.1

What are some characteristics of a good web developer?

There are a few inherent qualities shared by many successful web developers. After speaking with professionals in the industry, we identified a few transferable skills that play a pivotal role in the day-to-day operations of the job.

1. Good communication skills

Web developers must work with multiple members of an organization to ensure everyoneโ€™s goals are being met through the website. Itโ€™s important to maintain open lines of communication and be able to translate technical jargon into laymanโ€™s terms for other team members.

If you have children, youโ€™ve probably become a skilled amplifier when trying to explain complex subjects to your curious kiddos. If you can do a decent job of explaining why the sky is blue to a 5-year-old, you should have a pretty good handle on simplifying the language used to describe a technical problem to a client.

2. Love of learning

To make it as a web developer, youโ€™ll need to have a natural curiosity. If youโ€™re the type to scour YouTube and web developer blogs for tutorials and inspiration, and just canโ€™t wait to jump in and start learning new techniques, youโ€™re on the right track.

New scripts, widgets and designs are released daily so web developers must stay up to date to remain relevant in the industry. At first it might seem daunting trying to keep up on all of this, but often these new tools are created to make things easierโ€”which provides a nice incentive for the effort.

3. Patience

A website is never fully complete. Often, client work will go back and forth and the smallest details will require tedious nurturing, according to Sid Savara, senior web developer at Honolulu-basedย Red Aloha. When minute changes or updates are requested, itโ€™s important to remain patient. This also reinforces the need for strong communication skills; the better you are able to communicate, the less likely you are to have a never-ending development process.

4. Perfectionism

โ€œMost web developers Iโ€™ve encountered [suffer from] borderline obsessive compulsive disorder when it comes to checking and double-checking their code,โ€ says Sam Mc Roberts, CEO of Seattle-basedย VUDU Marketing.

It is critical for web developers to employ this extreme attention to detail, according to Mc Roberts. One small mistake can break an entire website, so he says thereโ€™s a very limited margin for error for web developers when the time comes to launch a new site or page.

What web development skills do you need to succeed in the field?

Knowing that you have the natural characteristics of a web developer is a great start, but you wonโ€™t find success with those qualities alone. In order to excel in such a technical profession, itโ€™s imperative that you master the hard skills to complement the soft skills.

Our job posting analysis helped us identify the top 10 technical skills employers are seeking in candidates.2 This will give you an idea of which skills you should focus on sharpening to become a hot commodity in this field.

Top 10 technical skills for web developers:2

  1. JavaScriptยฎ
  2. HTML5
  3. Web application development
  4. Javaยฎ
  5. Software development
  6. j Queryยฎ
  7. SQL
  8. Angular JS
  9. CSS
  10. User interface (UI) design

Not familiar with some of these skills and coding languages? Donโ€™t worry! This is precisely the type of web development training and expertise you can expect to gain from earning aย degree in Web Programming.

How do you become a web developer?

Now that youโ€™re aware of the skills needed to succeed as a web developer, letโ€™s talk about the education and training that will help you land a job. The educational requirements vary depending on the work setting, according to the BLS, but the most common requirement is an associateโ€™s degree.1

Itโ€™s true that you can teach yourself to code online but remember that thereโ€™s much more to web development than purely coding. A formal education will help you master your programming skills, gain practical hands-on training and prepare you to successfully work with clients and find creative solutions to business challenges.

What are some common misconceptions about web development?

Now that you have an idea of what a web developer does, itโ€™s important to know what a web developer does not do. We want to clear up any misconceptions about this career before you decide whether itโ€™s right for you.

1. Web development is not necessarily web design

One of the biggest misnomers out there is that web development is synonymous with web design, which is untrue according to Oleg Korneitchouk, director of web development at New Jersey-basedย SmartSites. He says that development is taking the designerโ€™s work and turning it into a functional website.

Designers are the creative individuals who are focused on the overall look and feel of a website; while developers are the analytical individuals who concentrate on the general performance aspects of the site. Some of this confusion may stem from the close relationship between front-end development and web design. Many web designers also learn the skills of front-end developers in order to become more well-rounded.

2. You are never โ€˜finishedโ€™ with a website

A website is like a plant that needs constant nurturing. Just when you think itโ€™s perfect, youโ€™ll find a glitch that needs to be fixed or an element that the client wants added. Technology is constantly evolving so there will always be improvements to be made. Think of it this way: Even if someone created the โ€œperfectโ€ website in 2005, that site will still look very dated and could have several security or structural deficiencies in the back end when compared to the latest and greatest sites of today.

3. Web developers do more than just write code

The truth is that web developers donโ€™t just sit and stare at a computer screen all day. While writing code is a big part of the job, interacting with designers, illustrators, copywriters and other personnel involved in the planning process is an essential piece of the puzzle.

Web developers also analyze website performance and work with website stakeholders to prioritize strategic updates and improvements. On top of that, itโ€™s crucial for them to spend time researching new techniques and technologies.

Our analysis of more than 1 million job postings seeking candidates with a Bachelorโ€™s degree in Computer Science helped us identified six of the top options.1ย

1. Software applications developer

  • Projected employment growth (2018โ€“2028): 26 percent (much faster than average)2
  • Median annual salary (2018): $105,5902
  • Common job titles: Software development engineer, Java developer, applications developer

What do software applications developers do?

Think of how often you send an email, scroll endlessly on social media or stream media on your phone or computer. Practically everything we do with the help of computers is powered by software. Software developers are the people responsible for creating, testing and modifying these programs. Everythingโ€”from the front-and-center user interface to the unseen underlying code that ensures it performs as plannedโ€”is affected by software development professionals.

In their day-to-day work, most software developers work as part of a development team whose work is segmented and guided by project managers. Their product must meet desired specifications and ultimately interface well with other segments of codeโ€”which is no small feat. Some software developers may specialize in areas such as quality assurance, where duties focus on testing software for issues, documenting them and assisting in resolving whatever gone wrong.ย

2. Computer systems analyst

  • Projected growth (2018โ€“2028):9 percent (as fast as average)2
  • Median annual salary (2018): $88,7402
  • Common job titles: Business analyst, business systems analyst, IT analyst, information systems analyst

What do computer systems analysts do?

Computer systems analysts roles are so versatile that there are many ways to answer this question. But at a high level, theyโ€™re the individuals responsible for merging business needs with IT initiatives. They use their expertise to analyze, improve and plan IT systems in order to meet the specifications needed for a business process.

So what does that look like? Theyโ€™ll spend a considerable amount of time meeting with the โ€œbusiness sideโ€ of an organization gathering information about organizational needsโ€”How will this system be used? Will this need to work at a larger scale in the future? Will this need to connect with other systems? Once the specifications are determined, computer systems analysts will work with the technical teams to develop plans for how theyโ€™ll deploy technology to meet those needs.

3. Systems software developer

  • Projected growth (2018โ€“2028): 10 percent (faster than average)2
  • Median annual salary (2018): $110,0002
  • Common job titles: Software architect, software developer, systems engineer, software engineer

What do systems software developers do?

Systems software developers have quite a bit in common with software application developers. They use their knowledge of programming, mathematics and computational theory to develop software to meet a specific need. That said, the work of a systems software developer is often focused on creating or modifying things like entire operating systems (Windowsยฎ being a prominent example) or industry-specific software systems.

With Microsoft and Apple dominating the desktop computing scene for operating systems, you might think a role like this would have a very narrow range of potential opportunities. The reality is that many systems software developers work for employers or clients that need specialized software the greater public would likely never see.

Industries like financial services, telecommunications, aerospace engineering and law firms all commonly employ systems software developers. Another growth area springs from the growing number of devices with internet connectivityโ€”that touch screen menu on your fancy new refrigerator required someone to design the interface and the underlying system controlling it.

4. Web developer

  • Projected growth (2018โ€“2028): 13 percent (faster than average)2
  • Median annual salary (2018): $69,4302
  • Common job titles: Front-end developer, back-end developer, web designer, web development architect

What do web developers do?

As you can probably guess, web developers are the tech professionals who build, maintain and design websites. Web development is a subcategory of careers that can cover a fairly broad range of roles. Some web developers focus primarily on โ€œfront-endโ€ features like the design, layout and other surface-level functional elements of a website. Others focus on the โ€œback-endโ€ systems that ensure the site works as intended and communicates properly with other systems connect to the siteโ€”for example, inventory databases and customer relationship management systems for online retailers.

These roles focused on the โ€œback-endโ€ of a website are likely the best fit for computer science graduates. Their knowledge of database structures, programming logic and mapping information flows can help bridge the gap between desired website functionality and the systems an organization uses.

5. Network systems administrator

  • Projected growth (2018โ€“2028): 5 percent (as fast as average)2
  • Median annual salary (2018): $82,0502
  • Common job titles: Systems administrator, information analyst, information systems manager

What do network systems administrators do?

The role of a network systems administrator can be hard to pin down as job duties and descriptions will vary somewhat from organization to organization. That said, most systems administration roles will focus on the high-level management and maintenance of servers, storage and the associated operating systems and applications that run on top of them. Duties can include pushing out system-wide updates and patches, creating user accounts with appropriate levels of access and deploying new hardware systems as needed.

With cloud-based servers and storage becoming increasingly common these roles have shifted substantiallyโ€”and in all likelihood will continue to evolve. Systems administrators who understand how to use scripting languages to automate processes are a valuable asset to an IT team.

6. Database administrator

  • Projected growth (2018โ€“2028): 9 percent (faster than average)2
  • Median annual salary (2018): $90,0702
  • Common job titles: Database administrator, database analyst, database developer, data architect

What does a database administrator do?

Data is essentially the lifeblood of technology. As both an input and output, it powers software and systems and helps us do things that would be mind-boggling 20 years ago. Every online purchase, restaurant review left, doctorโ€™s appointment scheduledโ€”the list goes onโ€”depends on databases that are well-structured, secure and regularly maintained. Thatโ€™s where a database administrator comes in.

Database administrators are tasked with tending to a key component of any information technology or software operationโ€”the databases they use. In this role, they determine how to securely store and efficiently organize important data and ensure access is granted to the right users.

They may also merge existing databases or migrate data to new platforms, which takes careful planning to ensure compatibility and functionality remains for connected systems. Database administrators are also tasked with regularly creating database backups in order minimize damage caused by storage failure.

7 SECRETS OF SCORING VERY HIGH IN JAMB UTME EXAM

7 Secrets Of Scoring Very High In Jamb Utme Exam…

It baffles me a lot whenever I meet with Jambites who struggle to score barely 200 in JAMB. I begin to ask myself, “What is so difficult about JAMB that lots of students struggle with it?” From my findings, I discovered that lots of students are not knowledgeable about how to pass JAMB and pass it very well.

It is not as difficult as most students think. As a result of this, I decided to come up with this write-up which I titled “7 Secrets of getting 280 and above in JAMB.” The seven secrets are discussed below;

1. Set a Target

Personally, I believe that there is nothing impossible that one cannot achieve. In scoring 280 and above in UTME exam, the first step is for you to believe you can achieve and set a target on the score you want to have in the end of the day.

Overtime, I have observed that most students do not have a specific score they want to have in the JAMB. All they do is just to read without a specific target. However, I always encourage Jambites to set very high score as their target. Setting a target will help you to be focused on what you want to achieve in the exam.

2. Study smart

It is not all about studying hard; it is about studying smart. Kindly get the JAMB syllabus and past questions, studying closing to identify the core topics JAMB often repeat year in year out. If you can study those topics very well, I think the job is half way done.

Also, understand your study pattern and not emulate friends. I used to have friends who loved drinking lots of water whenever they were studying. Hence, it is left for you to learn to study smart in preparing for the exam.

3. Practice

I remember practicing my JAMB past questions up to a point where I knew almost all the answers off hand. I had different forms of past questions for every of my subjects. What I am trying to point out is it is very important for you to practice very closely especially the JAMB past question because it will expose you to the patterns of questions set by JAMB. Also it has been proven over time that JAMB repeats questions from previous years. You can be fortunate to come across such questions during your exam.

4. Do not cheat

The prevalent thing among Jambites is relying on different forms of examination malpractices to score very high in the exam. But unfortunately for them, they end up having very low scores despite the exam malpractices.

If you want to indeed score 280 and above in JAMB and eventually gain the much-desired admission, stay away from exam malpractices before, during and after the exam. Funny enough, majority of courses taken by year-one students are topics selected from JAMB syllabus. So if you fail to study now, if you still encounter those topics even after you gained admission through the back door.

5. Rest

I know this point may seem unnecessary to you, but it is of great importance if you truly want to perform very well in your UTME exam. The problem most studious students do have is their inability to set out time to have some rest. The human brain is often stressed a lot by constant study.
Hence, it is advisably for you to always take intermittent rest. It looks so funny to me whenever I meet students who study all night a day to their JAMB exam. To me, such study places sheer pressure on them. A day to your JAMB exam is for you to take out time to rest and ruminate on what you have studied over time.

6. Gist with Friends

The popular saying that no man is an Island ‘is applicable in this situation. As a jambites do not isolate yourself. Make friends with fellow Jambites and exchange ideas with them because you can never know everything on your own. However, do not make friends with the dullards who would draw you back all in the name of making friends; make friends with those you will learn a great deal from.

I remember when I was preparing for JAMB in 2011, I encountered a group of guys at the public library where I used to study. These guys were very intelligent and I learnt a lot from them. Aside learning from friends, making good friends helps you to be abreast with any latest rumour or news about the exam. I know a lot of people who could have performed very well in JAMB if they had been exposed to timely information.

7. God factor

The God-factor can never be ruled out. In everything you do, put God first. The bare truth is you need God’s direction when preparing to score 280 and above in JAMB. As a matter of fact, such feat is attainable even without any special centre ‘during the exam. Personally, I do not support or encourage students to enrol for special centre ‘for exams; I always believe in merit.

Below are the tips to pass JAMB examination:

1. Overcome the fear;
2. Study relentlessly;
3. Do not cram questions;
4. Study smartly;
5. Always test yourself;
6. Be pessimistic;
7. Seek advice from experienced once;
8. Learn time management;
9. Jettison any plan to cheat;
10. Be focused and avoid distractions;

10 Tips On How To Pass JAMB UTME 2020 In Flying Colours

Clearly as it seems, the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) which is a necessity in gaining admission into any Tertiary institution in Nigeria is a must pass; and with this post โ€œhow to pass jamb utme 2020โ€œ, i intend walking you through proven tips and tricks to smash this one.

The form is out, candidates are gearing to registering and the examination date is fast approaching for JAMB 2020.

To certain individuals, it poses as an insurmountable mountain while to some, itโ€™s just a walkover. Nevertheless, persons in both categories still yearn for more tips and tricks to improve their prospective chances of having a 300+ high score  in the JAMB UTME 2020. Verily I say unto you, โ€œfear not!โ€ Look no further, for your worries are over.

10 Tips On How To Pass JAMB UTME 2020

1. Get set, prepare and prepare

One important key to success is self-confidence. An important key to self-confidence is preparation. Prepare your mind, clear every storm of distraction off your head, pray, take a deep breath and relax. Now, let your mindset be likened to that of a victor.

Set goals on the marks you aspire in each subject, considering your strengths and weaknesses. Commence efficient work with respect to your set goals. Early preparation engenders outstanding results, but either ways, itโ€™s not too late to begin. Procrastination they say, is the thief of time. Get set now!

2. Gather quality textbooks and cogent materials

Invest now, enjoy later. Fending for quality in the stead of quantity makes you a qualifier in any field. Know theย JAMB UTME 2020 syllabus,ย Subject Combinationย and acquire textbooks that comply with it. JAMB also recommends certain books, try your possible best to get them.

But not only Textbooks are required for studying. Get a quality notebook, jotter, calculator (optional) and other essential stationery. Your textbooks must be comprehensive enough and self-explanatory including illustrations and what have you? Remember, aim for quality!

3. Plan your game

The JAMB UTME 2020 is a very crucial examination. Therefore, studying for it has to be without any iota of levity. Structuring out a plan is thereby needful. What do you make plans for? What to read, when to read and where to read. These all have to be incorporated into what I call a โ€˜Study Guideโ€™.

Personally, I donโ€™t assimilate subjects that have to do with numbers without music or noise being heard, whereas, other subjects have to be read in quiet environments. We know ourselves, and if youโ€™re yet to, receive knowledge of yourself now! Design a study guide bearing the knowledge of yourself in mind.

4. Study hard and enjoy your game

Yes! Now the โ€˜Study Guideโ€™ has been structured. Itโ€™s now time for implementation. Studying is an act of reading carefully with an intent to remember, so, this is not like reading those broadcast messages you see on social media. Set your study goals and objectives, they would help strengthen and serve as a reminder when youโ€™re getting fatigued.

Also get your jotter stand by, jot down essential points donโ€™t assume itโ€™s already up there. Ensure you fully understand. Serve as your own teacher, make good use of mnemonics as reminders, now weโ€™re at the fun part. Donโ€™t overstress your brain, take a break when itโ€™s getting boring, take a cool drink, surf the web, play a game or just take a walk. Then, get back to your books and enjoy the real game

5. Improve your strengths and strengthen your weaknesses

My sister, my brother, itโ€™s high time we stopped deceiving ourselves, we know what we know we know and also vice-versa. Stop skipping those topics because they seem incomprehensible, stop spending less hours on subjects that pose fathomless. As it gives you tough time, try twice as much to disintegrate it.

Thereโ€™s no limit to learning and no knowledge they say is lost. Therefore, you know youโ€™re a โ€˜mathematics guruโ€™ or youโ€™re so good at any subject per se, try youโ€™re best to smoother those rough edges and render the little cracks so you come out suave and clean.

6. Make good use of past questions
In your present state, seek the past, acquire knowledge and, bam! You are set for an enviable future. If youโ€™ve never skimmed through any past question, I tell you, you arenโ€™t prepared at all. Now, if youโ€™ve skimmed through without studying and trying the questions, man youโ€™re still lagging behind.

When I say โ€˜studyingโ€™, I mean understanding the ethics behind JAMBโ€™s method of questioning, solving, taking note of the corrections and pointing out the recurrent questions. Iโ€™d advice that you cover at least 8 previous years of past questions in each of your subject.

7. Connect with like minds
The company you keep determines what accompanies you. All through your preparation for JAMB UTME, sieve out everyone whoโ€™s adding no value to your life.

in order to pass jamb utme 2020, you need get into an association of โ€˜Jambitesโ€™ having the same goal as you do, specifically the same subjects and make sure they arenโ€™t dummies unless youโ€™re ready to help, but help yourself first. Seek advice from those who scaled UTME through with outstanding results.

8. Get acquainted with CBT

As youโ€™re aware that  JAMB UTME 2020 will be purely a โ€˜Computer Based Testโ€™ (CBT), I urge you make tangible efforts in familiarizing yourself with the CBT atmosphere. Whether youโ€™re a computer literate or not, thereโ€™s nothing to worry about cos JAMB has made it easy enough to be apprehended.

Typing your Registration number on the keyboard is as easy as texting on WhatsApp. Whatโ€™s left is making use of the mouseโ€™s left button to tick your answers.

NB: make sure the mouse is working properly before you fill in your reg number by navigating the cursor around the screen. If it isnโ€™t working, quickly beckon on the officials around for help.

9. Stay updated

Never assume you know whatโ€™s going on, you donโ€™t. Weโ€™re in an age where information is very salient and dynamic. The JAMB officials come up with abrupt changes in dates. Stay updated and never miss a bit

10. Put God First

the tips and hacks above on how to pass jamb utme 2020 will not be possible if you neglect prayers. Funny how I put this as number 10, but if youโ€™ve been following, youโ€™d realize I mentioned โ€˜prayโ€™ in number 1.

That implies that prayer is part of your preparation. The place of prayer cannot be overemphasized, your religion notwithstanding. Mind you, not just praying, but believing and striving for righteousness which would help increase your concentration.

Those sinful habits have to stop, especially during this period, all they do is; embezzle your time, now imagine if you invest just half the time you spend on those immoral acts on your books, see how much you acquireโ€ฆ What Iโ€™m saying in essence is, try to stay consecrated so your heart desires become granted. Prayer with the right approach the master key.

These ten tips are on the basis of three keys (Pโ€™s)

(i) Preparation (ii) Planning (iii) Pursuit

Bear those keys in mind, engage them, never let them fall off your left hand and I assure your 300+ score in the yearโ€™s JAMB UTME 2020 unlocked.

These secrets tips on how to pass jamb utme 2020 will only be possible if you put in your best. Shun frivolities and lackadaisical attitudes and smash this jamb once and for all.

GOODLUCK !!!

JAMB Warns Candidates Against Accepting Admission Outside CAPS

Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) hasย warned candidates against acceptingย any admission that does not pass through its Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) asย any offer of admission not validated on JAMB’Sย profile page or offered through the CAPS is invalid.ย

According to JAMB, there have been complaints from the general public that three Public Universities have devised a method of โ€œoffering admissionโ€ to candidates outside the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) on their own designated portals.

JAMB Warns Candidates Against Accepting Admission Outside CAPS

JAMB described this as a deliberate act done with the intent to lure unsuspecting candidates to accept other programmeย  (courses) aside from their programmesย  (courses) of choice.

The board re-emphasized that the CAPS system isย  designed among other things to:ย

i. prevent institutions from unilaterally changing or proposing a candidate for admission into other programmes (courses) other than his/her chosen one;

ii. disallow an institution to skip a higher ranking candidate to pick a less ranking candidate;

iii. allow an institution to recommend a substitute programme for the consent or rejection by a relatively low-ranking candidate who is not likely to secure a place in his/her initial programme.

iv. allow a low-ranking candidate on each programme to, on his or her own, opt-out of consideration from the initial programme and be considered for a programme where he/she ranks high enough to be considered.

It, therefore, warned that any candidate who accepts such offer of admission does so at his or her own risk as there will be no regularisation of any irregular or illegal admission.

The board added that appropriate caution has been given to these universities which are to promptly withdraw and desist from such illegitimate action and any of such act will henceforth be visited with appropriate sanctions.

UTME 2020: What To Do While Waiting For Commencement of Registration

We are expecting the announcement of the 2020 UTME Registration soon;ย hopefully before the end of the year. Itย is important that prospective UTME candidatesย knowย that it is never too early to start preparing for it. As a matter of fact, based on experience, one of theย keys to smooth registration and success in every UTMEย is early preparation.

So this post will guide you on the few things you need to be doing at the moment while we wait for the commencement of the UTME sales of form and the registration.

UTME 2020: What To Do While Waiting For Commencement of Registration

1. Get your Nationalย Identification Number (NIN): In case you do not know already, no candidate will be allowed to register for the 2020 UTMEย without having aย NIN. We earlier provided a step-by-step procedure on how you can acquire NIN. So if you are yet to get yours, visit thisย link:ย NIN Application Guidelinesย and follow the instructions to get yours.

2. Know The Course You Want To Study: Deciding on the course you intend to study is one of the things you should do now before the registration begins. This is because you need time to think before settling down for a career/course. You shouldn’t pick any course. It has to be a course you have passion for; one that you have knowledge about.

3. Know the School You Intend to Apply for: Just like in choosing a course, you need to equally know beforehand the institution you want to apply for. Your criteria in choosing one should be based on whether the school offers the course you intend to study, the admission requirements of the school, the school fees as well as other personal preferences like location etc

4. Know the subject combination for your course:ย A lot of students make this mistake by choosing the wrong subject combinations for their course. ย If you want to avoid any form of mistake,ย use “the JAMB Brochure”, to see the requiredย subject combination for the various courses before registration begins. Remember, that choosing the wrong one can jeopardize your chances of gaining admission.ย  Be wise!!!

5. Startย Studying Smart:ย Finally, start studying now and don’t just study hard, learn to studyย smart. By now you should know that a good number of JAMB past questionsย are repeated every year. To study smart, you need to practice withย the Myschoolย JAMB CBT Mobile App for android phones or the Myschoolย JAMB CBT Software for Computer systems. Both contain over 40,000 JAMB past questionsย and answers.ย You can equally check out the Myschool CBT Classroom.ย

Schools, Institutions, Tutorial Centres, Business Centres & Cafes can start setting up their CBT Centres to becomeย JAMB CBT Agents and Training Centresย to help train students for the upcoming exams. For details on how to proceed,

With all that has been said, I believe you now see the need to start your preparation now before the registration begins.ย Once theย UTME Registration for 2020 Begins, we will publish it here on portal57.code.blog and give you step by step details on how to successfully proceed with your registration.
