First Thing: Biden says west is united on Ukraine

Good afternoon

Joe Biden has said there was “total” unity among western powers after crisis talks with European leaders on how to deter Russia from an attack against Ukraine, as 8,500 US troops are put on high alert.

“I had a very, very, very good meeting – total unanimity with all the European leaders,” the president told reporters shortly after a one hour and 20-minute video conference on Monday with allied leaders from Europe and Nato.

In London, Boris Johnson’s office also said “the leaders agreed on the importance of international unity in the face of growing Russian hostility”.

The UK prime minister had warned of “unprecedented sanctions” against Moscow should an invasion take place amid growing tensions over Ukraine.

Nigeria @ 61

61 Birthday Nigeria

God bless Nigeria the giant of Africa
They want to be like America 🇺🇸 but suffer like Lybia
Even civilised country like SouthAfrica still respect Nigeria 🇳🇬
China 🇨🇳 kill all their early leaders and today their future is better
But can we try that in Nigeria 🇳🇬 or are we different from other African

Then we believe democracy is better
Yet some people are deprive of their rights
Bokoharam don’t want to surrender
But they want compensation from our dear leaders
Political parties fighting each other
Our governors hating one another
Students want to walk together
But the worst is our lecturers
This has given us psychological troma
As we lie low and our heart get colder

@61
Nigeria@61

Certain things make our mind shiffer
This was not the ways of our fore fathers
Neither is it the way of our own maker
Either God or Halla
But it all started from our colonial masters
Ànd now transferred to our present leaders
Who call themselves political fathers
Doing everything to take over power
By even killing their own brothers
Above all, we are Nigerians

I’m ready to die, killer of Iniubong Umoren says as police parades him

Says ‘I raped as revenge on Runs Girls’…Tears as late job seeker is laid to rest in Uyo

THE alleged murderer of late 26-year-old Miss Iniubong Umoren,   graduate of Philosophy, University of Uyo, (UNIUYO), Uduak Frank Akpan has said he was  prepared to die if that would be the only acceptable justice for the heinous crime.

Akpan who spoke yesterday when paraded at the Police Headquarters, Ikot Akpan Abia, Uyo,   admitted luring and raping  more than six girls but denied ever killing more than Iniubong Umoren. He said he lured the girls by advertising for   phony job vacancies and that he did that   as a revenge for how girls had been duping him.

His parade was on the day family and friends gathered to commit the late job seeker to mother earth.

The 20-year-old and 200 level student of  Public Administration,   Obong University, Obong Ntak, Akwa Ibom State,    who was paraded alongside his father, Mr  Frank Akpan,   admitted to killing Umoren when she came for the fake job interview and he demanded for sex to which she agreed but insisted on using a condom.

His words, “What happened was that she came for the supposed job interview. I decided to use a reverse psychology on her. I told her whether she can work as secretary in a farm where hard drugs are kept. She said that she was ready to work. When she came I told her this farm doesn’t exist’ that it was just a hoax.

“ I told her that before we could even start I would like to have sex with her and she agreed   but she gave a condition that I should use a condom which I agreed. While I removed the condom she became furious and picked the nearby stabilizer to hit me on my head.
“She bit my left finger and tried to reach for the door screaming. While I was bleeding, in a bid   to stop her, I used the stabiliser also and hit her. And when I hit her she fell and thereafter she died.”

Continuing, the suspect added his father was not around and never assisted him in any way to either kill or bury the remains of the deceased.

Asked about his motive for inviting the lady to his family house when there was no job, the suspect responded; “Initially, I used reversed psychology on her. I have had very bad experiences with runs girls and prostitutes. I asked whether she could work in a farm where hard drugs are kept and she accepted.

“She even told me she took marijuana and cocaine .I felt that that was the best way to revenge for the runs girls and prostitutes. I used to patronize prostitutes but now I don’t.

“I am not happy about what has happened. But the commissioner of police has assured Akwa Ibomites and the entire world that justice will take its course. If the justice promised by the police on the matter will mean my life being taken, I am prepared to die.”

On his part, the father, Frank Akpan, a retired director in the federal ministry of lands, denied knowledge of the crime until he was invited by the police, even as he admitted that the house  in which the murder was effected was his own
On the confession of his   son admitting  that he had taken advantage of six girls in the compound, the father responded: “I’m not aware of that. The reason is that we just relocated from Abuja. I have not been around for 30 years. We just relocated because I have been retired. It is not even up to two years since we came back.”

He denied ever being in the business of selling human parts as alleged.

Asked to comment on the kind of justice he expects in the case, Mr Akpan stuttered and said: “I’m not happy about what my child had done. I don’t even believe this can happen to me after I had sent them to school, tried to bring them up. Yes, justice can be done if the system so permits.”

The state commissioner of police, Mr  Andrew Amiegheme   said he decided to parade the suspect to puncture the rumour that he had committed suicide while in police cell. He gave the assurance that the police would do their best to ensure that justice is not only done, but also seen to have been done, stressing that the police cannot cover up any crime in the state irrespective of who is involved.  Tears as remains of murdered Akwa Ibom job seeker are laid to rest.

Meanwhile, tears poured as the remains of 26-year-old miss Iniubong Umoren, gruesomely murdered while seeking  job were committed to mother earth in her hometown, Nung  Ita Ikot Essien, Oruk Anam Local Government area of Akwa Ibom State  yesterday.

Late Iniubong Umoren, a graduate of Philosophy, University of Uyo (UNIUYO) was allegedly lured, raped, murdered and buried in a shallow grave by a 20-year-old serial rapist and killer,  Uduak Frank Akpan in Nung Ikono Obio village in Uruan Local Government area of the state.
Late Umoren’s friends, family, residents and particularly students of Faculty of Arts,   UNIUYO defied the downpour to attend the funeral and also stayed till her remains were committed to the   earth.

The deceased  friends and  classmates who came to pay their last   respect were  clad in black attire and could not hide their grief at the graveside.

The funeral service which started exactly at 10:50 was conducted by Faith Tabernacle Congregation Ikot Ibritam District Oruk Anam, after the lying-in-state at her fathers compound. The brother of the deceased, Mr. Ukeme Ephraim Umoren appreciated members of the community, relatives and friends for coming from far and near to mourn with them. He also commended the state government and security agencies for the support offered to the family in their moment of grief.

Fielding questions from newsmen, the member Representing Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal constituency ,Mr. Unyime Idem reassured that those behind late Umoren’s  death  would be  brought to book.

He urged the people of Oruk Anam LGA   and the student community to remain law abiding even as relevant government authorities are working to ensure the deceased get justice.

If you’re romantically coupled, think about what stage of the relationship you are in. This will give you an idea of how to address the card, and what tone is appropriate.

By keeping your recipient in mind, you’ll also write a more meaningful message. Are they a jokester who loves to laugh? Or would a cutesy saying be more their style? While it can be a challenge to put our feelings into words, speaking from the heart is always best. Personalized touches such as a pet name or a shared memory show the thought you put into writing and will make your Valentine feel extra special.

Once you’ve incorporated all these elements into your message, it never hurts to deliver it along with a perfectly paired duo of flowers and gourmet dipped strawberries. The time you spend making someone’s Valentine special will be long remembered, so make sure to share the holiday with everyone you love.

10 famous computer scientists you should know about

Scientists are often thought of as those who study nature or chemistry and make discoveries in medicine. But we can’t over-look the scientists who chose to study a much different specimen: the computer. Read up on some famous computer scientists who have used their knowledge, expertise and inventive spirits to impact our world forever.

1. Barbara Liskov

Liskov helped develop and implement programming languages like CLU, the first programming language to support data abstraction. CLU has become like a guidebook for other programming languages, such as Java, which borrow from its syntax and semantics. She also helped develop Argus, a high-level language designed to support the construction and maintenance of distributed programs.

2. Elon Musk

Referred to as the real Iron Man, Elon Musk is probably best known as the famous CEO of Tesla Motors and SpaceX. However, he got his start with computers. At the age of 12 he began teaching himself to program which later paved the way for the launch of his first company, Zip2. But he didn’t stop there. He went on to become a co-founder of a company that later became PayPal, which allowed him to strike conversations with the brain-children behind Tesla Motors.

3. Larry Page

Can you go a week without Googling something? How about a day? We have Larry Page and co-founder Sergey Brin to thank for the trusty search engine. While at Stanford, Page started Google as a research project, and Brin joined in. The two soon discovered that their project could be used to build a search engine the likes of which no one had ever seen.

4. Carl Sassenrath

What if your laptop could only perform one function at a time? You’d have to choose between typing a document and reading an article or browsing Facebook and checking your email. Everything would take ten, maybe even twenty times as long to complete if it weren’t for Carl Sassenrath’s Amiga Computer, the first multimedia personal computer of its time. Sassenrath is also the developer of REBOL, a specialized computer language technology.

5. Guido Van Rassum

If you’re interested in computers science, then you’ve probably heard of Python, the most popular coding language of 2015 according to codeeval. Python is known for its versatility and is used by countless programmers and companies including Spotify and Dropbox.

6. Mark Zuckerburg

One of the most recognized names on the list, Zuckerburg is the founder of the most widely-used social networking tool of our era. It’s hard to imagine life without it. But everyone has to start somewhere, and Zuckerburg started Facebook in his Harvard dorm room as an exclusive site for Harvard students. Today the platform has become a place for friends and family to connect and business to build brand identity and engage with customers.

7. Brendan Eich

Whether you know what it is or not, you’ve probably heard of Java Script or even seen the language at work several times in your life. Brendan Eich developed the programming language or script, which is most widely used in HTML or browsing pages.

8. Tim Berners-Lee

What would the world be like today without “www.”? Berners-Lee is the inventor of the World Wide Web. AKWA IBOM: 33 YEARS ON

Udom Emmanuel is leveraging his financial sector background to drive the growth of the state, writes Etim John

He got to the saddle well prepared for the job. Udom Emmanuel, prior to assuming office as the governor of Akwa-Ibom State in 2015 had cut his teeth in a complex mix of politics and governance as the Secretary to the State Government.

It is safe to state that in the 33-year history of the state, Emmanuel distinguishes himself as the consolidated modest gains of the past and escalated deliverables in government in an unprecedented manner.

His plans are lofty and ambitious. They are not for faint-hearted men. Only men like Emmanuel who had a successful stint in one of Africa’s most successful financial institutions could conceptualize and bring to fruition big projects in record time.

Deploying his financial re-engineering skill set as finance expert, Emmanuel subjects each project to sustainability tests to justify scarce capital for projects. He set out with a smart, realistic five-point agenda of: wealth creation: economic and political inclusion, poverty alleviation, infrastructural consolidation and expansion and job creation.

When the federal government was busy tinkering with the plan of relaunching the rested nation’s national carrier without success, Udom Emmnauel put Akwa Ibom on the global map by hitting the nation’s airspace with Ibom Air, the only state-owned airline. The airline that started operations in 2019 with three aircraft today boasts of five solid aircraft in its fleet.

The aircraft shuttle Uyo-Lagos –Abuja- Enugu and Calabar with plans to make entry into the West African region market starting with a short haul flight to Douala, the Cameroon’s capital.

The indelible imprints of Emmanuel in the socio-economic, infrastructure sphere of Akwa-Ibom have undoubtedly repositioned the state as a ‘civil servants’ state to an emerging thriving sub-national economy. Aside from the revenue outlet the airline provides, the idea of owning an airline also opens up the economic space by stimulating productive economic engagements due to ease of movements in and out of the state.

In an organic manner, the planks of his agenda are enabling one another in a creative manner. For instance, Infrastructure development enables job creation through attractions of investors who are ultimate creators of wealth. The resultant effect culminates in poverty alleviation and share-prosperity as many idle-hands get busy. They become economic agents that contribute to the government pool to service more needs.

That is vantage Emmanuel thought pattern – clear, sustainable and dignified economic empowerment model. He knew dishing out handouts to unengaged folks is unsustainable and won’t last. He rather created an enabling environment for them to be self-reliant and thrive.

Today, over 20 industries and still counting are operating in the state employing thousands of Akwa Ibom citizens.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit without warning, throwing the entire humanity into utter confusion, Emmannuel was and is one the distinguished leaders that triumphed in the face of unprecedented adversity caused by a major public health crisis.

The governor promptly rose to the occasion and triggered measures to mitigate the spread of the deadly plague that was ravaging states. Since April 1, like a General who has a duty to defeat the enemies and protect his troops, the governor forfeited sleep for Akwa Ibom citizens to live. Every night he holds meetings to review the COVID-19 safety protocol measures and recalibrates his strategies in tandem with emerging realities.

Little wonder why Akwa Ibom records the lowest rate of infection. It was largely due to pro-activeness of Governor Udom Emmanuel.

On the education front, the governor is repurposing the education curricular of the state to be globally relevant and 21st century competitive. In a technology-driving world where mediocrity has no place, visionary leaders must galvanize their people to be relevant in a knowledge-driven world.

This was the premise that led the Udom Emmanuel administration to hold the first ever Education Summit where experts and other stakeholders reviewed the education template in the state and consequently realigned it to modern standards. As a result, a greater premium is placed on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) to build the future manpower for the emerging industrialized state.

The government also encourages students with payment of West African Examinations Council, WAEC fees and other generous grants to facilitate education development in the state.

The administration of Udom Emmanuel also places priority on road construction. The government has constructed over 1700 kilometers of economically viable roads across the state. This road helps in ease of transportation of agricultural produce from the hinterlands to the city thereby boosting economic prosperity.

The power supply in the state is rated among the best. Residents enjoy a minimum of 18 hours of uninterrupted power supply.

This has drastically reduced the cost of production as huge cost hitherto allotted for energy is channeled towards core production.

Today, Akwa Ibom is adjudged one the most peaceful states in the country. It was not a coincidence. It was a product of creative ways of using economic empowerment to guarantee social harmony especially among restive youth. The Udom Emmanuel administration established Youth Empowerment Programmes (AKEES) to take jobless youths off the streets.

Many of the youths who could have been creating havoc and causing social strife in communities in Akwa Ibom State have been empowered.

The great strides of Emmanuel in Akwa Ibom are too numerous to enunciate. Is it the first- led factory at Itam, first Shoprite at Ibom Tropicana or the Automobile Assembly Plant at Itu or DAAR Communications Broadcasting Complex, Abak? The achievements are numerous.

As the state marks its 33 years anniversary, Akwa Ibom is fortunate to have a man like Emmanuel at the helm. This is the most challenging time to be a leader. Oil, the mainstay of Nigeria’s economy has plummeted many times. Many sources of livelihood had been ravaged by the pandemic which further constrains leaders from augmenting revenue shortfalls from taxes.

Obviously, no mediocre in power will survive this perilous time. It requires great financial wizardry and unusual fiscal discipline to service the government and the people. The financial sector background of Emmanuel has been very invaluable this season.

Many are amazed how the government could still flourish amidst pandemic. The reason is simple, Akwa Ibom made the right choice in Emmanuel whose financial discipline and savings for the raining days saved the state.

HAPPY AKWA IBOM DAY

COVID-19: Akwa Ibom Okays Aggressive Community Testing

Akwa Ibom@34

Akwa Ibom State Government has given a nod to the state Covid-19 Incident Management Committee to continue in its aggressive community testing for coronavirus cases and immediate isolation and treatment of persons who have tested positive for the virus.

The state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Comrade Ini Ememobong, made this known while fielding questions on News Day on ARISE TV in Uyo.

The commissioner stated that the state Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, had directed that aggressive community testing for Covid-19 be carried out in the state as part of his administration’s efforts to curb further spread of the virus.

He stated that apart from the regular testing of those showing symptoms and those identified by contact tracing, it was necessary for the state government to intensify efforts in carrying out aggressive community testing in order to win the fight against the health pandemic.

The state Spokesman said that the approach was one of the adopted measures by the state government to further ensure that students in exit classes currently writing their mandatory examinations as well as those writing the ongoing Senior Schools Certificate Examinations, SSCE were given full protection from contracting the virus.

The commissioner further added that prior to the commencement of the examination, the state government had procured a large number of facemasks for distribution to secondary schools in the state which he said had long been given out to the students for their personal use.

He hinted that although a lot of students had been tested, only one sample was confirmed positive. He explained that the affected student was currently writing the examination from one of the isolation centres in the state with additional measures put in place to ensure that the integrity of the examination was not compromised.

Comrade Ememobong disclosed that the state IMC was currently visiting various communities in the state to carry out random testing to forestall community spread, especially among the people dwelling in the hinterlands.

Addressing questions raised on the amount so far expended on the fight against Covid-19 by the state government, Ememobong stated that Governor Emmanuel was a leader who upholds the principles of accountability and probity in all his financial dealings and would at the right time disclose a comprehensive expenditure details to the public. He allayed the fear that financial details would be withheld from the public domain.

He assured that the state government was working assiduously at flattening the coronavirus curve in the state by increasing contact tracing and arresting community spread of the disease. He added that no stone would be left unturned in making sure that the state wins the war against the Covid-19 pandemic.

EGYPT’S FORMER PRESIDENT MUBARAK DIES AGED 91 AFTER

Former President Hosni Mubarak, who ruled Egypt for 30 years, died on Tuesday at the age of 91 after undergoing treatment in intensive care following surgery.

The former air force officer will be buried in a military funeral but the timing was still unclear, a military source told Reuters.

Mubarak’s son Alaa said in a Twitter post that included images of his late father that he had died on Tuesday morning.

Mubarak was ousted following mass protests in 2011. He was arrested two months later and spent several years in prison and military hospitals.

He was sentenced to life in prison for conspiring to murder 239 demonstrators during the 18-day revolt, but was freed in 2017 after being cleared of the charges.

He was however convicted in 2015 along with his two sons of diverting public funds and using the money to upgrade family properties. They were sentenced to three years in jail.

In an early reaction, the United Arab Emirates’ minister of state for foreign affairs, Anwar Gargash, said the Arab world had lost a statesman who took significant national and historic positions.

Mubarak did not leave the country after his overthrow, unlike Tunisia’s Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali, who fled with his family to Saudi Arabia after being ousted in protests that triggered the “Arab spring” revolts that spread to Egypt and elsewhere in the region.

In contrast, the Mubarak family has stayed in Egypt since 2011 but kept a low profile.

Many Egyptians who lived through Mubarak’s time in power view it as a period of autocracy and crony capitalism. His overthrow led to Egypt’s first free election, which brought in Islamist President Mohamed Mursi.

Mursi lasted only a year in office after mass protests in 2013 led to his overthrow by then defence chief General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who is now president.

Mubarak-era figures, meanwhile, are gradually being cleared of charges, and laws limiting political freedoms have raised fears among activists that the old regime is back.

Mubarak had long maintained his innocence and said history would judge him a patriot who served his country selflessly.

MAY HIS SOUL REST IN PEACE.
